Otterbein questions

My daughter is considering the BA for Theatre at Otterbein and I’d love to talk to someone whose child has done this program or other theatre programs at OU. Thanks!

Hi!! My daughter is in the BFA Acting program. All of the theatre programs are very close! The BA kids are in some of the same classes, etc. They are all friendly and hang out together. We love Otterbein. It’s a small lovely campus. The program is small. Any questions, let me know!!

@theatremom16 We are visiting next week! My S is accepted in the BFA Acting program. How are the weekends on campus? Do most of the kids go home or are there enough there that is doesn’t feel empty? We are on the west coast, so he will be far from home. Is there crossover with the MT kids? How is the balance with GE requirements?

We are looking forward to our visit!

Hi!! Most of the theatre kids are around campus on the weekends. It’s pretty quiet in general, but it will be opening weekend for Thoroughly Modern Millie! Are you guys going to the show?

There is a LOT of crossover between MT and Acting. They all are required to audition for all shows. So, sometimes actors are in musicals and MT’s are in plays. My daughter has dance every day and she does voice lessons. They are required to take dance their first year. After that, it is optional. She is definitely going to keep up with dance all 4 years.

We live in Columbus, so if would like to meet up for dinner I am happy to answer any questions!! My daughter as well, of course! Just send me a message!

Can anyone compare Otterbein to Baldwin Wallace? They seem so similar.

Otterbein’s theatre program is much smaller than BW. Otterbein as a University has about 2000 students vs BW 3,000.

I’d love to chat with you about Otterbein. I have a bunch of questions. Could I email you privately?

Sure thing!

How do I email you? Sorry… new at this!

@mindee62 You would click the user name in blue and then it takes you to a page with a “message” button. But, you need 15 posts to do that. You are at 12 posts so maybe post a few “test” messages in this thread to get to 15.

Anyone else have thoughts on Baldwin Wallace vs Otterbein?

Anyone have connections to kids who did Ba’s in Acting instead of BFAs?

Is there any diversity at Otterbein?

My daughter is a junior BFA acting major at Otterbein. Paraphrasing an old post of mine (I’m lazy-ish), on a similar topic:

The path can be slightly different and (intentionally) more flexible for a BA student. If I understand my daughter correctly, a BA would take first-year acting classes with the BFA students, and then other things, like dance, stage combat or makeup, with bfa students after that, if you were to choose those electives. I think the acting classes might be different after the first year (but same great profs). The mainstage productions do cast BA actors alongside BFA actors – it doesn’t happen all the time, but it happens. (Same thing for BFA actors being cast in musicals and vice versa.) Otterbein has a small, close-knit, mutually supportive and respectful theatre community – which includes BAs, BFA actors, dt, mt, etc. if you’d like to chat with my daughter during your visit, let me know. I know she would be happy to speak with you. She could also direct you to some BA kids.

My daughter is from NYC – and she’s on campus every weekend, along with most of the theatre kids. Not sure about the rest of the school, as she’s never mentioned an empty campus with nothing to do as an issue.
