@jym626… A little bored today ?.
LOL. I thought that was so funny when whomever it was mentioned that. Couldn’t get that out of my mind.
Instead of messing up the website’s layout you guys should have worked on a mobile app for College Confidential. That would have been a better use of time.
@Knowsstuff - actually, there was a problem with the way my flower avatar was showing up on my home page, so I clicked on my photo, and presto, there were the 4 basketball options! Anyone who wants to silent protest the cc layout change can change their avatar back to the buttcrack one
It looks like the POB just changed the autoselect that previously occurred for posters without personal avatars.
@skompella9892 - there is/was a mobile app. It seems to have been taken out of the apple store when hobson’s bought cc (IIRC) and it supposedly is no longer supported, and I was hoping that this upgrade didn’t affect the old app (which I still have and use), but alas, no luck. The upgrade changed the app presentation of the forum too.
Oh my, been away for awhile. What happened here? Goodbye…
I hate the new format.
I absolutely do not want to be included on some list as an active for the month or most active in this area (can’t even figure out what area that is). At. All.
My posting numbers are on each post I make. That’s enough to let anyone who can read know I’m a (soon to be NOT) frequent poster. This feature was a waste of some developer’s time.
Re: a mobile application (which I DID beta test for this site many years ago before it was launched…). It’s no longer available and is unsupported. BUT we were told it was a “priority” to get a mobile app up and running again. This was said over and over. And you all can see…it was never done.
In my opinion, Hobson’s made a decision to go with whatever their vendor provided as this update. They wanted more ads, and more very visible spots for @CCEdit_Torrey to post links to articles…as those are very clearly visible, and easy to access.
Is it possible that Hobson’s has decided to jettison the forums and move towards a site that provides links to articles only? It sure seems that way.
Any chance the “featured” threads could be listed starting with the most recent? Since you can only see a couple…it would be good to see ones that are current as opposed to ones that are from 2013 or 2014.
Also, there are featured discussions that never got any traffic…things with one or two responses? Who determines THOSE should be “featured”.
I see the default “girl diving into the pool” avatar has been slightly scrambled. Now it just looks like a weird basketball. For some reason, it is even more disorienting (although a bit less disturbing, especially on the athletic forum when people are talking about their swimming daughters). I guess after a few years it may be the push I need to add an avatar.
Happy they are fixing some of the simple things, but it sounds like the navigation issues aren’t going to be addressed.
for me, the only good thing is that the UX is so terrible, that I’ll spend less time on cc and get back to real life.
I’ve been a member since 2015 and visit this site several times a week. One child just graduated college and second heading to senior year. I no longer require help with college but do sometimes offer advice from my experience. I have always enjoyed Parent Cafe for fun, sometimes spirited discussions and I have gotten good information on many other things other than college. This will be my last visit here.
Thank you CC for making it easy to leave this site!
My guess is the “vendor” is actually a foundation/shared application that is white-labeled for numerous discussion boards. Maintaining a coding & QA staff is a very expensive proposition and probably untenable for a free service with limited traffic like CC. So the foundation vendor probably updated the core application and the customer can do very little to modify it and can’t “roll back” to the old version. Is this correct? I am just guessing here.
Those of you that have used Squarespace, WIX, or similar services will understand. if those companies change things in the base template you use, there is little you can do about it other than starting from scratch somewhere else – and when you are dealing with huge legacy data and thousands of active accounts, that is a nightmare.
If my guesses are true, then there is probably some empathy due management. No business likes their “good customers” unhappy, and I also guess they would and will change what they can to prevent that. Let’s hang in there!
It took me a couple tries to even find this forum/thread. I’m not sure I have anything to add that hasn’t already been said, but the new design is just incredibly awful. Difficult to read text, too much white space, can’t easily find threads I wanted to read, etc., etc.
If the goal was to get people to spend less time on the forums, they have succeeded with me.
Love your avatar, @dadof4kids
@thumper1, regarding comment #727, featured threads do show the most recent ones first. Are you seeing something else? If yes, can you please take a screenshot and send it to admin@collegeconfidential.com? Thanks!
Running Chrome on a laptop. You have to fix the font/format/color to reduce eye strain. I am on a computer screen ALL day long, every day. I just spent 30 minutes on your site and need to leave now and rest my eyes. None of the navigation issues matter to me as I typically would just view latest posts every 3-4 hours and scroll down to see if anything was of interest. And yes, it meant way, way too many hours on your site. I don’t wear glasses and have truly ever experienced such a dramatic issue with a site bothering my eyes. It’s truly like you’re trying to encourage your readers to leave.
They made articles posted by the staff very visible. The thing is I never read them and I assume many people here didn’t. We came cause of the forums. This is all disappointing and when their user base drops I hope they don’t sit there scratching their heads wondering what happened. This is the only thread I’ve visited this week for the most part. This needs to get fixed prior to the class of 2024 picking up cause idk if I can successfully moderate the UCLA forum with this interface, especially when the UCLA class of 202x thread will get 40+ posts a day in peak months.
I’m getting at least more comfortable with navigating where I want to go, but still have major issues with the font/white space. So hard to stay on the site for longer periods of time. IMO that needs to be done the first thing addressed.
I also don’t understand why the pins on the pinned posts aren’t in the same spot. It makes it super hard to scroll through to find the first non pinned post.
@Postmodern - that was a very helpful explanation in #731. thanks.
for me, I feel lost and bewildered without the easily found forums site map/outline. I do not feel like clicking around looking for my old haunts. I’m staying to bookmarks and latest posts.
for some of the featured articles; I think those are click bait. those featured articles are full of fluff. Sure a newbie might appreciate them, but the true, helpful advice and sage knowledge comes from the wise users.
@ CC ADMIN: NO WHERE ELSE in the (English-speaking) world can you get free advice on such important matters . Your forums & moderators and wise posters are amazing, and a precious volunteer resource to so many parents and kids. Do NOT alienate those posters. I’d make as much effort as possible to not keep them happy. This site would become bleak without that collective knowledge.
@CCadmin_Sorin Really? Can you not see what we see? Isn’t that what the flagging system is for? I have flagged several “featured” threads that are 5-10 years old and have asked for them to be removed. There are a couple at the top of each forum but when you click on more featured, it brings up a longer list of old threads. Once one is removed, it is replaced with another old, outdated thread from the list. There is a time limit restriction between flagging threads so I can’t flag them all.
