Keep the picture of the girl to the right and print on the left. That’s easy to read. Change the picture of the girl studying with the print on the book. Can’t make our the words major etc on that line. Also the other picture with brick. Ssme issues. Then put the list of forums there so we can get back to posting.
These are simple changes to make and will be effective.
As the late @fallenchemist told me when I became a moderator, it’s an art, not a science. The thread in question was about the UNC shooting, which required a choice as to which was the key message - the shooting (cafe) or the campus (parents forum). Sometimes we make mistakes, but I’ll stand by that decision.
IMO, the wider audience (I wanted to reach about the incident that had just occurred at that time, at a bar just off campus) was in the forum. If we just wanted to chat about how unsafe incidents occur on college campuses and how we parents should worry about our kids or what have you, that would have better belonged in the cafe. Way back when there was a thread called “sinners alley”, where parents chatty chatted about unimportant things and had virtual drinks or what have you. To me, that is (now) the cafe. The importance of a shooting **at a college **, where some parents’ kids may attend, IMO, belongs where a wider audience can see it, not where we shoot the breeze. JMO.
You know…back in the day when the PR boards were in a state of collapse, CC got a bunch of new members who were defecting from the PR boards. That had to be 2003 or so.
It’s not impossible to start a forum, but it IS hard work. How many of you were on the Admissions Advice forum created by Carolyn back in 2005 or so? It was threaded and by category. But it did take a LOT of work.
I also participated in another forum on Yuku…and it also was threaded and by category. There were options to pay and have no ads, and options to just see the ads.
Well, this is amusing. We just discussed the thread about the shooting at UNC Greensboro, and now, suddenly, a featured thread appears to the right side of the page that is an old 2015 thread about a robbery/shooting at JHU.
Ok, it appears most of “old timers” are here…Crazy thought, why don’t we just chat here without any structure. People can post a question here, others can answer, when we are done with that topic then we can move on. That way we’ll just have one place to go to and not have to navigate around this forum (because we can’t).
Regarding Vanilla Forums, here is a showcase of forums that use it, showing the many ways they can be skinned. Note that some have a more traditional information dense format where many more forum sections or threads are visible within a typical browser window.
Yes, I saw your answer after I posted @jym626 , since it was on another page so I edited my post accordingly. And tying in with an earlier conversation, the Random Questions thread is a Featured thread.
