It’s a long-standing business decision to not allow photos; this is not intended as a photo-sharing site.
I’m hoping an oversight; the mods have already called that out.
My guess is yes. My morning routine, after reviewing ant flagged posts from overnight, is to quickly skim the latest posts. It’s taking me fewer pages to get to a post that had no updates from my last log-in.
Anyone who usually uses the site can tell that posts are down - no brainer. I would even say “agrees, likes, etc.” are down - people are just not feeling the love - or they don’t want to risk pushing anyone up the leaderboard!
I also thought that about the parent cafe politics section - an oversight? That has been sitting dormant for years, seems like it would be a no-brainer to request that go bye-bye.
However I will say if you WANT to get the site moving again, perhaps reconsider opening the political section.
Well I finally think I figured the forums out. Super confusing for me. Even search didn’t work as I expected but after a couple days I think I can get around where I want to go but the UX around organization did not align with my brain. I still am unsure if I am seeing all the threads although I spotted the View All button. This new site plan is a tough one for me although I like the font choices and the ease of seeing how many new posts are in a thread. Just the navigation and organization of the forums threw me and I miss seeing them all at once and just selecting.
Sorry if this has been asked but previously when I hit the My Bookmarks link it took me to a page of all of my bookmarks. Now it just is a drop down and I can only see two. Is it just me? I’m on my iPad.
I don’t and have never seen any video. I have adblock plus, so maybe that is why, though someone else mentioned they have no ads but keep seeing the video…
@Suzy100 When I hit bookmarks, it still takes me to a full list, cell or tablet But I’m android.
This is one of the more baffling aspects, why we see different on different devices or platforms-- not just a rare occurance. It’s what I ight have expected 30+ years ago, when everyone was creeping through new technologies.
OK if I go to Home then My Bookmarks I get the full page, but not if I do it from the top left button thingy when I’m on a page like now. Then I get the drop down. Thanks peeps.
Thank you all for your screenshots! I think there is a confusion regarding the featured thread. Nothing has changed there. As was always the case, we display two featured threads at the top of each forum. These threads are displaying in chronological order. The featuring process is manual and is done by our team of Forum Champions, our moderators, or the admins. They do not automatically update.
While you may come across forums where the featured threads are not the most “recent” please bear with us, as we are working with limited resources. Thanks!
@RandyErika , I do not think the font color is darker at all. I still have to concentrate to read it, and it’s too narrow. In fact, I went through all my iPad settings to try and create more contrast, enlarge font size, etc… and nothing works.
Yes, @CCadmin_Sorin, some Featured was always there. But the master list of Highlights (Latest, Bookmarks, etc,) was in the top left, not floating, depending on what device you’re on. On my tablet, it’s at the right, in landscape. If portrait, under the threads. On the cell, below, either way.
And because we’re now so scrolling-dependent, move too fast and you’re in Recent Activity. It neither easy not intuitive to place yourself where you want to be.
And the hassle of no Save Draft button impairs free movement, too. I still have no idea how long Ineed to stare at the screen for any autosave.
The “most helpful in this category” list seems to be the same no matter what category you open. Perhaps there are really only 5 people on this site answering questions.
Why is the featured discussion on this page about a move-in day robbery that happened 4 years ago and another thread that’s also 4 years old? If I were new to the site I’d assume it was no longer active and the information no longer current.
@austinmshauri, you probably mean the Featured Discussions that appear on the right side panel. I reported that back to the tech team to look into it and establish if it’s intended behavior.
Just saying. The ignore function stinks. Instead of making pest posts and posters who make them completely invisible, it still shows the pest’s name blurred out. Not useful. I never used that function before because it was not needed, but with the recent “upgrade” the number of pests posts increased, so it became a necessity.
@CCadmin_Sorin Yes, I recognize that featured threads were always there but I think they no longer should be. With the changes to the website, space is at a premium given the redesign and extra space given to white space and ads resulting in lots of scrolling. Given that, make things easier on people. The featured threads really are not helpful, as even you say they are usually dated and often not the most meaningful threads. It was easy to ignore them before. Not so easy now. Now they are in the way and the fact they are dated makes them all the more annoying.
@Nrdsb4 The piece of my post you are quoting in your post #944 is no longer relevant because the nonstop video that was playing has since been removed. Thank goodness!
I agree that “featured posts” aren’t particularly useful. The PINNED posts are mostly pretty helpful. And I guess getting rid of “featured posts” is one way to reclaim a bit of the bad use of space and excessive scrolling. But it is a tiny step in what is a huge problem.
Some specific numbers from for the College Admissions and Search subforums are below. The final full day in the range (6/29) had only 303 posts, which is a far smaller number of posts than any other day the >2 month long range prior to the update for which I reviewed. Looking at random June days in prior years also shows much larger number of posts, so yesterday may have had the smallest number of forum posts in years.
College Admissions and Search Subforums Post Count
Week prior to update (6/18 to 6/24) – Average: 465 posts per day
Partial week since update (6/26 to 6/29) – Average: 360 posts per day
It doesn’t surprise me that the # of posts came down. This new design is not user friendly. I wish we could go back. It’s very cumbersome to do searches, find posts, etc. I don’t post but I lurk a lot and find lots of information (previous format). I wonder if the number of lurkers has gone down too.
I’m 99.9% a reader, not a poster, but I started logging in a few months ago to avoid that obtrusive ad that covered the text, and realized I liked the way it remembered where I left off/what was unread, so now I mainly browse while I’m logged in.
My top issues with the redesign, some of which I know have been noted over and over, and some not so much:
the HUGE pictures, text, and amount of white space. I feel like I’m back in kindergarten. (Previously, I could browse the forums on my very small iPhone, horizontally (in “desktop” mode), and see what was there - zooming in if needed for a particular thread. Now if I try to view horizontally on my iPhone, I literally get 7 lines of text! Not helpful!)
the articles featured prominently on the “forums” page, taking up at least one or two screen’s worth before we can scroll down to the actual forums. There’s already a place for articles - on the CC home page. Shouldn’t we get forums if we select the forum link? (And really - what value do the pictures add?)
the fact that topics I’ve read are bolded, and topics with new posts are unbolded. That’s the opposite of every other forum I’ve ever seen ever!
the date/timestamp at the bottom of the post rather than the top - again, the opposite of every other forum I’ve ever seen.
Edited to add: Also - PLEASE make the "pin"and the “lock icon” more visible/bolder, more prominent…
That said, one thing that a lot of people are complaining about is not being able to find various forums (parent cafe, alpha list of schools, etc.) At least on the desktop version - if you scroll down a bit, on the left, under “Top Forums”, there are four options - College Admission, Prof & Grad, Pre-college, and CC Community. If you expand each of those it gives you a list of the various topics that used to be on the main forums page. So, more scrolling and clicking, but they are there. I agree with what seems to be the consensus, though - just show us all the available categories/subcategories on one page - preferably in a font/layout that fits more than a few lines per page!
But (again on a desktop), now “Latest Posts” is on the first screen I see, w/o scrolling, so that’s pretty much the only thing I’m checking out now.
