We’ve already been told it’s not happening.
Personally, I think I’m done providing free content to Hobsons. They’ve messed the site up so badly on mobile, and ignored input from us (the primary content providers). It is too much work to use now. As someone said above, maybe Reddit is a better place to volunteer time to help students and parents going forward.
I have to agree with @intparent - I think I’m done. I had hoped to see a response from the site administrators, as others have mentioned. A simple response, yay or nay to a lot of devoted site users who have taken the time to share their feedback on the “fresh” look. (I think responses have been polite and well intentioned.) There’s been very little response and it seems to be focused on seemingly (in the current grand scheme) trivial things like removing unacceptable language. I used this site for the easy to read/access/understand Lastest Posts screen and for the knowledge/experience that other members of the community were quick to share on a variety of topics. I could scroll through the 10 screens of “latest” in a short period of time and feel caught up. It is very sad to lose this site with a high school sophomore in the house but I will look for other sites, incl. Reddit to fill the void. !!Alert to any techie looking to start a new site…create a forum based site like this one used to be - nothing fancy, just the basics - and I’m there!!
Is reddit better formatted/less confusing, though? Sincere question because the few times I’ve visited that site I haven’t been impressed.
I’m not familiar with reddit but I think that while it’s very likely that it’s not better (could even be worse?), the mere fact that it’s not THIS site gone bad/awry makes it more palatable.
I just logged in for the first time in three weeks (?) and was startled by what I found. I’ve taken a quick look through this thread and the site and am really disappointed by what I’ve found. I will look elsewhere too.
Can we close out accounts?
Mobile is VERY bad for me. Eye strain, so much scrolling, and navigation.
I did not hate the desktop version (Safari) as much as I thought I would.
This format is awful for viewing on the phone. The font is too light, and line spacing too large. It is hard to identify new posts in forums. Can you please allow us to toggle back to the old display?
Reddit has an “Applying to College”
Section with 100k members.
After 30 days as a member you can apply for a subreddit for your own particular interest(s).
In the meantime I’ve found it fairly easy to bookmark feeds I’m interested in and look up topics I’m interested in and want to return to.
Unlike here.
If I find a particular subreddit which fits anything similar to parent cafe I’ll tell come back to tell you.
On reddit you can stay on your browser or get the mobile app. Two different experiences. Still testing it out. But at least the post date is where it belongs. And bolded questions are those you haven’t seen yet. But you can say trOl. Interesting that seems to be the biggest concern.
All of the “featured” threads in Common Ap are very old. I flagged one but can’t flag them all. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/categories/featured/common-application
@CCadmin_Sorin A recent reply thread looked like this Replies to: In general, why is the college “party culture” viewed as negative? Quotes were written out. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/college-confidential-cafe/2149070-in-general-why-is-the-college-party-culture-viewed-as-negative.html#latest
FWIW still hating this new format, especially the font and scrolling necessary.
I’ve been doing my best to get used to this new set up, and nothing is different since this thread began, except the video ad seems to be gone.
- THE NEW FORMAT IS TOO HARD TO READ! It’s too pale and too fine. I find it hard to believe they can it make it darker, or less narrow. Surely it won’t ruin the aesthetics of the look they want to make the font readable?
- The search function seems to work intermittently. I’ve tried to search specific usernames, threads, etc... Most of the time, when I hit search, nothing happens.
- It’s still totally confusing to find specific fora.
- The time stamp at the bottom of a post is downright obnoxious. I have to scroll to the bottom of a post to see when it was posted. This matters because I do not want to waste my time commenting on an old or inactive post. It’s too time consuming.
Those are my four main beefs. In addition, and I won’t be specific, but I have sound evidence that Hobson’s is being unethical and I am not sure I want to continue to help them. It’s the senior posters on the CC forums (who give their services freely) that make this site useful, and Hobson’s doesn’t give a fig.
I hate this format. I think I might be done.
Is there a reason almost an entire page of the “latest posts” are threads by new members who have fewer than a dozen posts among them? Activity must be really low if all the new members’ threads are mashed together. It makes this site look like everyone here is asking for info. and there aren’t many people to give it. That’s too bad because there sure are a lot of new members. I hope they get what they came here for.
Lol. Reddit post just said CC is now unreadable. Wasn’t me.
If anybody in design or tech is interested or cares, fonts have a “readability” scale. It’s all the little swirls on letters that actually make them readable or not. Basic design will tell you that.
It’s not all about “pretty”. It’s about function. And this ain’t pretty.
So signing off again. None of this is rocket science. Go get “Forums for Dummies” and read it. And double read the chapter on organization.
Unfortunately, I have seen this movie before. I was part of a well know speech recognition forum and the main company just didn’t get it. Companies have to understand they are serving their customers /members. Well, a reseller gave them a chance and when they didn’t budge a reseller made his own site and its now the largest most active site on the subject and the manufacture site is long gone.
Sites like One Plus (Chinese awesome phones… Can get at t-mobile now) started to listen and actually involve their members and the site and sales took off.
CC right now really doesn’t have competition. When that changes then they will respond.
At the very least they should be making some updates and like a “this is what we are working on” post every now and then. There must be some serious issues since not changing the blinding color would be like the first thing I would do to at least let everyone know that “something” is being worked on.
You would think they wouldn’t want the negative press and vibe. Strange way to run a business.
Here a featured thread that’s been closed for six years. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/princeton-university/1512138-princeton-in-the-summer.html
I would fire the people who designed this terrible update.
Now I’m having problems replying. It’s happened twice where no text appears even though I’m typing. It’s not my computer keyboard as it’s only happening on this site. I’ve had to close out CC and re-open to get it to work.
I’m fed up too. Happy to move to Reddit or have a sit out at this point.
I went to Reddit now, signed up for the applying to college subform but found lots of ads there and less functionality. I am completely new to it so maybe that is the problem.
The closed feature threads are nothing new. They just show up more prominently now. I’ve tried “unfeaturing” threads, but often another closed one takes its place. Moderators don’t have time to go through and pick out new threads to feature.
would someone who can create a new thread on Reddit please make a new “CC members check in here” thread please ?
