Out-of-State Applicants to UVA, UNC-Chapel Hill

Last discussion I saw on this was from 2005. Does anyone have any up-to-date experience with out-of-state acceptances to University of Virginia or University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill?

65% of UVA students come from inside Virginia, 80% of UNC students from North Carolina (by covenant). 35% of total applicants are accepted, and we're supposed to do the math.

As an independent counselor, I don't want to steer exceptional out-of-state applicants away from these excellent schools unnecessarily, but I also don't want to raise false hopes.

Would appreciate your input! Thanks!

My brother applied to UNC-Chapel Hill from Florida (he’s a '12), and was accepted.
He wound up going to Dartmouth, but wrote a letter asking if his friend who was waitlisted could have his spot instead.
The admissions office said “It doesn’t work like that.” but his friend wound up getting in anyway.
My brother was #1 in his class, his friend was #10.
So I would think that exceptional out-of-staters would have a pretty good chance.

Thanks for your input!
