So I just got accepted to Berkeley from out of state. I know tuition is way more expensive for out of staters, but does anyone know what the policy is with becoming an in-state student?

You don’t.

Its 1 year in-state living required to become a resident of CA. So once you’re a sophomore you are an official resident of the state.

^^^^^^^^^
That would be nice, but no. You don’t get in-state status by living in the Berkeley dorms.

um…thanks for the help guys. can i get some proof of anything like a link to their page?

California considers residence by where the main financial support lives - the parents in most cases - not by where the student lives. Grad school is different, you are considered independent by then regardless of the source of funds, but for all four years of undergrad, your apartment or dorm room is not going to get you considered a resident.

There is a process and form, the Statement of Legal Residence, that you have to file in order to waive OOS costs. [Online SLR FAQs - Office Of The Registrar](http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Residency/slrfaq.html)

It is a little more nuanced than this, for example armed forces veterans are treated differently as are legally emanicipated minors.
my financial support also lives in new york. also, i cant fill out an SLR until i submit a positive SIR, which i’m not ready to do yet. my decision will be based on whether or not i can become a resident

While that may be true for purposes of voting, the OP will NOT be able to become a resident for tuition purposes. Unless the parents move, or the OP becomes independently wealthy, it ain’t happenin’
