Out of State Student deciding...

Would like advice on the vibe of the campus outside of school and on weekends. Suitcase school?? We are from the West so our son will not have a car and while he wants a small school for him - do many of the kids drive home every weekend? My son and husband are there now- beautiful, sunny day and no one is outside.

I would definitely not call Furman a suitcase school. There are always people on campus during the school year even during Furman’s summer sessions there’s still a good population on campus. What time of day were they walking around? It was saturday and even though this is a challenging school we still like to sleep in. I was outside today and saw many of my fellow peers.

Zoom- no Furman is not a suitcase school. We are also from the west coast and my student is always busy on the weekends. For her and her friends, weekends include going out for dinner, seeing a movie occasionally, parties, going to Fall Park in town, etc.
It also includes the mundane; running errands, doing laundry.

This weekend there are a few off campus functions that may have driven students off campus. Also on Sundays most students are back in the library studying.

Most students bring cars to school so your son will always be able to join the crowd going off campus for a meal or a night out.

My student was also from the west coast and felt most students did stay on campus on the weekends. She also had no car the first year and had plenty of friends to drive her and found plenty to do on campus and around town.
