Out of state students' experiences

I'm interested to hear about the experiences of out of state students, expecially from the New England area. How was your adjustment to UMD? How have your found the student body - any surprises? Also, for those students from NE, how do you plan to get home most often - driving or flying?

Hey I am not from New England but I am an out of state student from the University of Maryland. There are some important things to keep in mind before you decide to go to UMD. Maryland's big state school so a lot of people came to Maryland because of financial reasons so some people aren't always as excited to be here as I was. I sometimes get a "its just the University of Maryland" vibe from people. Also, its sometimes hard to find things to do (namely parties) during the first semester because you don't know anyone upper class men. As far as the good things, i really enjoy being in a new area. I remember being in 8th grade and taking a mini-vacation to DC, and now I can get there any day I want. Also, Maryland students seem to be very willing to branch out and don't only associate with their high school friends. A lot of them do have a lot of friends from high school, but for the most part they seem interested in making new friends and social groups.

Im a maryland resident and one who will probabely be sending "its only maryland vibes" if I end up going there. Honestly its a great university though. Extremely close to DC and you really wouldnt be bored there at all. There will be alot of people who graduate highschool in my area though who go to UMD with their friends. In my private school I would think about 20% of the graduating class goes to MD but I honestly dont think you'll have problems finding a group to hang out with. Hope you enjoy MD!
