out of state transfer to TEMPLE (FOX BUSINESS)

Hi, I am moving to Philadelphia. I plan to transfer from Baruch college (CUNY) to Temple University accounting program. For the first year I will be considered non resident, and tuition will be 29000$. As out of state student, can I apply to financial aid, any transfer scholarships, grants? or I will have to pay full 29000?

on Temples webpage I didn't find any scholarships for transfer students from other states.

also, I have spoken to Financial Aid representative here in New York, they said THEY WILL NOT HELP ME ANYHOW to pay my tuition because I move to Philly. And Pennsylvania wont help me out too, because I am not a resident yet.

When you transfer to Temple, you will be paying Out of State tuition. If you are an undergraduate student, it is HIGHLY LIKELY that you will be paying out of state tuition for the duration of your time at Temple. You cannot establish instate residency for tuition purposes easily as an undergrad. Your state of residency is where your PARENTS reside.

You will need to complete the FAFSA and send it to Temple. Temple will determine your need based financial aid award. The school is a public university in PA and it’s first obligation for need based PA funding is to residents of PA.

Once you leave your school in NY, that school does NOTHING for you any longer in terms of financial aid. Financial aid does NOT transfer (with the caveat that if you are Pell eligible you would be Pell eligible at any college).

My gut says you need to do some more checking. I don’t think you have gotten all the information you need about the costs of attending Temple as an OOS student. Yes…youi will be paying the full cost (minus the Stafford loan, and any Pell Grant if you are eligible).

thumper1, thank you so much for taking your time to answer my questions

I am 22, so my residency no longer depends on parents, but anyway my whole family moved to Philadelphia.

If I take a year off from college, and become resident (12 month living in state), and then apply, that way I can receive at least some help?

NO…your residency status for financial aid is until age 24. I believe you will find that for undergrads the state of residency is where your PARENTS reside.

That your whole family now resides in PA sheds different light on all of this. In most cases, you family needs to reside in the state for 12 months PRIOR to attending college to establish your residency there. BUT ask the question at Temple. Things you need to ask:

Do I need to have my family and I establish residency PRIOR to my enrollment at Temple? For how long?

If I enroll at Temple as an out of state student THIS coming year, will I be able to change my status to instate once we have satisfied the residency requirement?

(at Some schools…the status you enroll is the one you keep for the duration…so this is important…you need to find out if Temple grants changes in residency status once you are enrolled…)

For financial aid purposes, you will be required to submit your parents’ financial information on the FAFSA until you are 24.

Re: will you get some help? You are entering as a transfer student and very often schools offer less funding to transfers than to incoming freshmen.

Re: need based aid, this will be based on the info on your FAFSA. Temple does not guarantee to meet full need…and they don’t. Depending on your EFC per FAFSA, you might qualify for federally funded aid. At the very least, you will receive $6500 in Stafford loans as a soph, and $7500 in each of your final two years.

If they grant you instate residency, you will save the difference between in and out of state rates.
