Out of state tuition

Hey guys, ok I'm in a very unusual/difficult position. I was recently accepted into the Univerisity of Arizona for Fall 2013. I graduated high school in Mexico and moved to Arizona in June 2011 and have been living here since. I just finished my second year at Pima CC where I have always been paying in-state tuition and am now ready to transfer over.. the problem? They classified me as out-of-state at the UA. I turned in my domicile affidavit, and got rejected, then turned in my petition to change residency classification, they rejected it, and I appealed their decision where I met with them and they denied me once more. That was my last string of hope and now it's gone. What should I do now? I cannot afford out of state tuition and it's not like I have any other state where they would charge me in-state rates. Oh, btw, I am a U.S citizen and was born in AZ. Has anyone been through a similar situation? Thanks!

You can read the UA rules here:
https://students.asu.edu/residency_classification_guidelines

Probably one of these requirement causes problem for you:

Demonstrate the ability to meet all living and educational expenses from self-generated funds under the student’s control for the last two tax years and document that the student has not been claimed as a tax dependent by anyone for the last two years.

Provide clear and convincing evidence of intent to establish a domicile in Arizona beyond the circumstance of being a student; overcoming the ABOR directed presumption that no emancipated person has established domicile in Arizona while attending any educational institution in Arizona as a full-time student.

These rules are very similar in other states too.

Where do your parents live?

Yeah, I guess they said the major problem is that I have been claimed as a dependent for the last 2 years by my parents, everything else is fine. It’s just that there isn’t another University where I would be able to get in state tuition :/

My parents live in Mexico

THAT could be the problemj–you are dependent and your parents are not tax paying Arizonia residents. I was in a similar situation many years ago. I was not entitled to any in state breaks because my parents were out of the country and did not claim any state as a residence.

Around here, getting cc tuiiton in state is pretty easy. They don’t seem to care much about checking out or enforcing OOS premiums. But the state flagships are a whole other story, requiring more than a local address, and verification is done if something doesn’t look right.
