UGA and UF have two of the best Journalism programs in the country. They are peers, so no point to paying OOS fee’s, if you can attend your in-state option (of course, sometimes you may get denied from your in-state option, and accepted at the OOS school, the admission requirements are about equal, with a lot of in-state demand for slots).
FSU’s program is a step or two behind UF’s and UGA (in funding and resources). You should only choose FSU over UF, if you’re a life long Seminole, or if FSU offers a better financial deal. You may also want to use FSU as a back-up, incase you don’t get accepted to UF(holistic admissions can seem a bit random at times).
If you’re looking at UGA as OOS, you should also take a look at the University of Missouri at Columbia. It’s journalism program is at least the equal of UGA and UF’s programs, but they do offer automatic OOS merit scholarships (unlike UGA).
For example, the OOS tuition rate is about $25K a year. The Mark Twain Nonresident Scholarship, based on your class rankings and test scores can give you up to $10K a year. $15K a year in tuition at Mizzou is a lot better than $30K a year at UGA (of course, UF/FSU would be $6.5K a year, and then you get a Bright Futures scholarship).
Several other scholarships are available at Mizzou, including several that can stack. If you’re an under-represented minority (URM), they offer several scholarships that will waive OOS tuition fees.
UGA (and IIRC, FSU and UF) do not have an auto admit to their journalism schools. You have to apply in your sophomore year. Would be a real shame to pay OOS tuition at UGA (assuming you are accepted) and then not get into the school of Journalism.
At UF, freshman admissions is handled by the University and not the college, an incoming freshman can pick journalism as a major (it’s auto admit). Your choice of major is not consider in freshman admissions.
However, it is a limited admissions college, so it can be very competitive for transfer students/u
