Out of State UGA Journalism or in state FSU communications/media studies

I’m very interested in these two colleges but I’m not sure where to go. Sports is a very big thing for me because I want to be a Sports journalists.

Can you afford UGA out of state? If so apply to both and see what happens.

Both schools have big sports.

UGA will be very expensive as an OOS student.

What are your parents saying about cost? How much will they pay each year?

What are your stats?

Why not UF?

UF is still a school of interest for me, but these are my top two

What are your parents SAYING about paying OOS costs for UGA? Will they pay the $48k per year to go there?

I will definetly need financial aid and scholarships

Then UGA isn’t an option. Too expensive out of state.

Do you know anything more specific about what you can afford?

Yes, what about UF - College of Journalism?

UGA sounds fine but not for OOS $$, imo.

UGA and UF have two of the best Journalism programs in the country. They are peers, so no point to paying OOS fee’s, if you can attend your in-state option (of course, sometimes you may get denied from your in-state option, and accepted at the OOS school, the admission requirements are about equal, with a lot of in-state demand for slots).

FSU’s program is a step or two behind UF’s and UGA (in funding and resources). You should only choose FSU over UF, if you’re a life long Seminole, or if FSU offers a better financial deal. You may also want to use FSU as a back-up, incase you don’t get accepted to UF(holistic admissions can seem a bit random at times).

Here’s a great video overview of UF"s program:

If you’re looking at UGA as OOS, you should also take a look at the University of Missouri at Columbia. It’s journalism program is at least the equal of UGA and UF’s programs, but they do offer automatic OOS merit scholarships (unlike UGA).

http://financialaid.missouri.edu/types-of-aid/scholarships/first-time-college-students-non-residents.php

For example, the OOS tuition rate is about $25K a year. The Mark Twain Nonresident Scholarship, based on your class rankings and test scores can give you up to $10K a year. $15K a year in tuition at Mizzou is a lot better than $30K a year at UGA (of course, UF/FSU would be $6.5K a year, and then you get a Bright Futures scholarship).

Several other scholarships are available at Mizzou, including several that can stack. If you’re an under-represented minority (URM), they offer several scholarships that will waive OOS tuition fees.

Good Luck!

^Isn’t it also easy to get in-state status over the summer or something in MO? Can anyone confirm?

then UGA won’t be affordable. They don’t give aid to OOS students.

UGA (and IIRC, FSU and UF) do not have an auto admit to their journalism schools. You have to apply in your sophomore year. Would be a real shame to pay OOS tuition at UGA (assuming you are accepted) and then not get into the school of Journalism.

At UF, freshman admissions is handled by the University and not the college, an incoming freshman can pick journalism as a major (it’s auto admit). Your choice of major is not consider in freshman admissions.

However, it is a limited admissions college, so it can be very competitive for transfer students/u

At FSU, it’s a limited access program.

At Mizzou, you can be auto admit(directly admitted), or you have to become a “Pre-Journalism” student.

May as well complete the set, here’s UGA’s requirements!!
