I hear arguments (financial) on colleges that would be Out of State vs a Private, anytime I am trying to apply for a Public Out of State but a well regarded college such as the UNC, Chapel Hill. which I wanted to apply but instead ended up applying for an in state private, which I was OK with, as well. Am I the only one?
I am also told that there are generous considerations which these private colleges offer which make them cheaper (Ofcourse there are the obvious private advantages) - any suggestions, comments are most welcome since my family has not gone through the admission / offer process and I tend to think that we would typically not receive this financial packages!!

The best way to estimate the cost of attendance is to run the “Net Price Calculator” at every school that you apply to. At least for us they were quite accurate. The NPCs tend to be way too optimistic if your parents own a small business, rental property, or a farm. Otherwise they are usually pretty good.
There are so many private universities and so many public universities that I don’t see how anyone can compare them in general. If you name specific schools then you might get some useful opinions.
Your post is a little confusing. In general, in state publics are usually pretty reasonably priced for their state residents. Out of state publics are more expensive (you usually have to pay higher out of state tuition rates). This is because public universities are supported by their state taxpayers, so give their kids a better deal. They also usually give better need based financial aid to their own state residents. A few publics give need based aid to OOS students - UNC is one. But typically that draws a lot of students to apply, making it harder to get into. OOS students often need higher stats to get in.
Privates don’t care where you live. But only a small number meet financial need.
For any school, you should run the net price calculator on each school website to see what you might have to pay.
The best way to determine cost is to run the NPC, as noted in the first post. UNC meets full need for all students and is harder to get into as an OOS student. I don’t know what private school you have in mind and what the FA is like.
