Out of state

are there any current our of state students that can shed light on how they get back and forth to school…also do you ship your stuff there before moving in? ship it back and forth each year? store it somehwhere? did you go to open house? how bout soar? how important is that? plane tickets cost over 500 a ticket for us (from chicago) not sure its worth the expense (plus adding hotel, rental car etc) for those events…
thanks in advance!

My daughter is a freshman at CP and we are out of state. She flies from SLO airport, but it is cheaper from San Jose or LA if you can find someone with a car going that way. There are many in-state students who drive both north and south on breaks. You can pack a big duffel bag and suitcase for plane and ship if you have other stuff. We purchased a lot of the stuff she needed at Bed & Bath in September. We will know more about storing stuff when summer comes, but I’m sure there are storage places to rent for the summer. We did not go to open house, but did go to SOAR (doubled as a family vacation). It is not necessary at all, in fact, she said it was rather boring. The WOW week is the week not to miss. Good luck at CP. It is a great school!

son is a currently a 2nd yr student from OOS, we did not go to open house and I don’t think it mattered. We did go to soar - mainly to get another look at the place before he moved out in the fall. We learned some things that were helpful for registration, but I don’t think it was critical to go. Bed bath & beyond has a thing where you can pick out stuff in your local store at home and then they will have it boxed and ready for you to pick up at the BB&B in slo when you get there to move in. We did that and it worked out well. We got bedding, pillows, mattress pad, hangers, etc. all the bulky stuff. Then I shipped additional clothes etc out to him after he got moved in to the dorm. He went in with a couple other kids on a small storage unit for the summer and left most of the non-clothes stuff there, that worked out well, also.

thanks for the responses!! my son is so excited about going to school at cp next year but the logistics being OOS are rough!! SLO is not the easiest place to get to!!

You mentioned not going to Open House and that it didn’t matter. I’m feeling bad that our daughter won’t be able to attend because of a school choir competition that same weekend. We only live 2½ hours away, so that’s not an issue. But, alas, we can’t go. :frowning: So, I was just wondering why it didn’t make a huge difference that your son didn’t attend Open House. I guess I just want reassurance that it’s not the end of the world that we can’t go! ;)

2leashes, we had been out to visit Cal Poly in the fall before his acceptance and it happened to be homecoming weekend, so there was alot going on because of that - clubs with booths, pep rally, etc., we did a general tour and an engineering tour, went to the farmers market Thursday night, and got a really good feel for the school and town. He was unable to go to open house because of a sports related conflict, similar to your situation. It looks like they have alot of good things going on for open house and it would definitely be worthwhile, but not terrible if you couldn’t make it. You are close, so you could probably do SOAR pretty easily in the summer, and definitely do the WOW week before classes start in the fall - my son made alot of friends during that time.

Thanks, tlam. While we did get to visit in August and see the Farmer’s Market, things were pretty dead on campus with school not being in session. Since we can’t make the Open House, maybe my daughter and her friend who was also admitted, can visit during the week sometime in the Spring. I know her friend’s mom would like us all to drive down together. It’s just hard finding a date that will work for all of us. :/

Thanks again for your reply.
