Out-of-stater with California relatives...

I'm sure this question has been beaten to death many, many times, so I apologize in advance.

I'm an OOSer (WA specifically) and I was wondering how difficult it is to establish residency with relatives in CA so that you would only have to pay in-state tuition? What measures can you take and how soon? What about if you live on an apartment outside campus that your parents pay for, would that constitute as in-state?

Thanks

Sorry, but you need to show financial independence, so your parents paying for anything (an apartment off-campus, a dorm on campus, or your tuition) would preclude you from qualifying. You have to demonstrate you are paying for college in totality - even the loans must be in your name and not co-signed.

I believe it's actually the state where your parents (one or both) reside that qualifies you for in-state tuition, at least for the first year. After the first year, I THINK you may qualify as an in-state student. I believe that you must attend the last 2 years in high school to qualify, but not so sure about college. However, this is merely observation and speculation. You should definitely take this up with the UCLA Financial Aid Offices, as to who qualifies and how do you qualify for in-state tuition.

If you're under 18, your residency is determined by at least one parent for the year before the first day of classes, so I think you're out of luck there. Otherwise, you have to demonstrate financial independence. The UCs are very vigilant about checking out in-state residency requests for OOS students.

You need to demonstrate financial independence for two calendar years to qualify for in-state residency as well as the ability to pay for your college tuition on your own, i.e., no assistance from parents. Also, you need to show that you're actually living in California--no long summer vacations at your parents' house.

my parents were planning to move to irvine next summer (from dallas). how would i go about establishing residency then, and how long would it take? would i have to pay CA taxes first, meaning i wouldn't be elligible for in state tuition until my junior year?

if your parents relocate to Calif (for job reasons), you can appeal for in-state status. Dunno how long it takes.
