I’m finishing up my freshman year here at Stern, and I’m beginning to really have second thoughts about my choice to go into an undergraduate business program. I just don’t know if it’s for me. Stern is an amazing program, and I’m really getting the sense that it’s a great business school, but I just don’t know if I’m the right person for business.

I’m really interested in math. I’ve considered doing a double major in Math/Finance. I love math here at NYU after only two classes (Calc II, Linear Algebra) and would like to pursue it further.

Basically, I have three options:

Stay in Stern, give up on math or do a math minor.

Go for a double major in math/finance. This is attractive but I know it will be a lot of work completing the requirements for both, and I’ll have virtually no space to pursue electives outside of either program.

Transfer to CAS and be a math major. I’ve been warming up to this idea as it will allow more flexibility, but I don’t like the idea of the Stern classes I’ve taken (Accounting, Micro, BiP, Regression/Forecasting Models) going to “waste” as elective credits.

What would you advise for someone who loves math, but merely likes business?

Number 3, if you only like business. Also, being a mathematics major can still land you a good job in ibanking or as an analyst. Try looking up how to become an actuary since you have a passion for mathematics.

i’d spend one more semester in Stern and then make a decision. this could also just be first-year jitters or end of first year burnout. i know that when finals week comes around, i’m incredibly tempted to re-evaluate my life :-P.

to be honest, i think that if you love math, you should leave Stern. math majors can still find their way into the business world. last summer, i met an intern from Brown who was a math major, and she was working at Goldman Sachs for the entire summer. you should have the freedom to pursue your other interests, and the double major would be incredibly draining.

If you’re worry about wasting Stern credits, think about it this way: Because you’re so passionate about math, you’re going to eventually internal transfer. And if you do it sooner rather than later, that’s less Stern credits gone to waste. :)

I think I am going to see how the fall semester goes and then make my decision. I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to put in for a transfer until November anyway.
