I know they offer a Math/Econ major as one....I really enjoy both subjects and am applying to CAS rather than Stern....but

What are the career prospects with this major....I feel I could hold up a strong GPA....but yeah internships...jobs etc...is it worth the price of an NYU Education?

i'm planning to take this as a second major. my first one will be finance at Stern, but i feel that it's gonna be impossible, so i dont' know... ugh! i still have some time to decide.

no, if u're a student majoring at stern, you can take another major at cas. the reverse is not true though. if you're a student at cas, you have to apply as a transfer at stern and you're not guaranteed acceptance. you have to apply to stern and get accepted there, in order to double major at stern and cas at the same time.

i don't think that's possible, but i dont' have a link to support my claims, so i'm not positive. why don't you ask an admission officer 1-212-998-4500

Err. Stern does not have a separate career services office. The Office of Career Services is open to ALL NYU students.

Akx06: I think you'd do just fine with your major, as long as you have an idea of what you want to do with it. Quantitative skills are highly valued in every field.

kullucka_lh3: I hope you saw my post in another thread (I can't remember which one unfortunately) where I said that a finance + econ/math major was probably completely impossible for a Stern student...

youkosiren: yes, i remember your post. thank you!! oh, btw, i have a question. if that combination doesn't work out for a stern student, what can u say about double majors in actuarial science and finance (at stern only)? is that even more impossible? it sounds like it. thanks in advance. your advice really helps, cuz sometimes we, high school students, get carried away dreaming and lose touch of the reality. thank you, again! :)

oh... haha... you did find the thread!!
and about that chinese thing... i really don't know ANY word in chinese :P... so yeah... i'm pretty much daydreaming. thanks for bringing me down to earth again. lol

Well, you could totally do a Chinese minor - the only thing is that you'd probably start from Elementary I, and you have to take through Advanced II to get a Chinese minor, so that's 6 classes right there and approximately 24 credits. You wouldn't be able to take very many (if any!) electives. Of course, you can always go over the 128 credit limit if it's necessary for you to graduate and still maintain financial aid eligibility, so it's not a HUGE deal, but you might have to take summer classes to finish in time.

You COULD double major in actuarial science and finance... but, I mean, why would you want to? Like I said, I'm a big fan of the econ theory major (mostly because I wish I'd done it so it'd be easier for me to apply to PhD programs :( )

Theory is just the name of one of the economic tracks - it's more focused on quantitative economics vs Econ Policy, which is more descriptive, I guess. I don't know if the major LOOKS better on PhD apps, but it definitely teaches you more of the skills you need to do research (ie, stats analysis and econometrics and so on).

Anyway, just take all core classes your first semester, and once you've taken some of the intro classes to finance, marketing, etc, you'll have a better idea of what interests you... and who knows, you might not want to do anything quantitative :P
