Out of these med programs...where should I go?

Northwestern's parties are pretty sick, though.

PipingHotTofu: I feel a lot like you about football. And I'm absolutely crazy about the Lakers. Plus, Kobe will probably be playing for about 8 more years, which would be perfect for me lol.

hydrogen3k: Really?

three6mafia: That's great to hear.

Though, this is just making the decision tougher :(. I don't want to pick where I to go on superficial measures. But at the same time, like many people applying to these programs, I want to enjoy undergrad. I mean most people plan on turning their work ethic up a notch so they can get into a great grad school. However; since it's guranteed for us, I hope that I'll be able keep my work ethic where it's at (which is pretty damn high) or, if possible, turn it down a little and have some fun.

Also, does anyone know how AP crediting works for HPME or USC Bacc/MD? Will studying for Calc BC, Bio, Amer. Gov, and English Lang be worth it? Will I just need to retake the classes? Will they only give me elective credits or actually let me out of certain classes? I heard it's not worth taking bio...since you need to take the college class 4 it to fulfill med school prerequisites. Will Calc or Gov be worth it?

USC doesn't give actual credits for a class for a lot of APs, but they still give you credits... and you can enter with a maximum of 32 credits i believe. i'm not sure how northwestern does it.

my friend at northwestern loves it there, honestly you'll have a blast at whichever one you're at. honestly, choosing an undergrad based on things like social atmosphere and sports might seem superficial but its really not. when you've got two great programs down like HPME and bacc/md, then these are things that're gonna help you decide.

both of the programs are very prestigious programs, so you'll have a good name at both... its just a matter of which one will give you the better name, which would be HPME. however, in my opinion, both of the programs are very hard to get into so theres not a great significant different.

you should choose based on things like which city you would like better and how you would like going to the actual SCHOOL, not just the program. for example, i would pick USC in this case because i have a lot of ties to california and i want to do my residency there and even potentially live there!

oh and to answer your question about the APs more fully, check both of the websites for their AP credit policy, they'll have everything lined out there!

def Rice/Baylor if you get in...I would say the best combined prog out there

northwestern can't even touch rice or baylor in any regard

is usc a full ride just for undergrad or all the way?
If its all the way, then you should definately choose USC because you will not have any loans to pay back after med school which is a huge plus

abnime: Yeah I was looking at the tables, but I didn't see anything about Calculus BC...does anyone know how that is credited?

three6mafia: Just undergrad. Yeah I wouldn't be thinking twice if they were paying for med school also lol.

Calculus is under "Mathematics" and for specifics on credit check

http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/apprerequisites.html

Rice/Baylor if accepted. If not, USC.

GujuGeek and everyone else who is in the same position- i might go to HPME and i am DEFINITELY not ANYTHING near a genius, so i guess that makes more of us!
but also...i am a girl....and ok i'm not THAT bad looking ;)
and i'm pretty sure that HPME has to have SOME socially adept people, i think it will be fun.

Rani, that's good to hear - we need more good looking doctors! Too bad I didn't choose to go to HPME...would be nice to meet :)

Oh yeah, there are a ton of Indians at NU.

Go to USC, it's a nice school and you'll save a ton of $$$.

AmritaRani: That's certainly reassuring! :)

TangyTart: True, which is why the decision is so difficult!

lol yeah...i'm worried about going and it being too hardcore for me...
(and there not being any parties, lol...so i hear you, guju and cirohpue )

i'm interviewing at Rice/Baylor this wednesday and I should hear back from upitt eventually...and both of those are giving me money! so i don't know what to do:P

hey guju, i think calc BC just lets u place out of havin to take it again and gettin u into multivariable right away...also depends on whether ur doin engineering or not

ya i got into hpme im def not a genius either haha

and the hpme-ers and their friends i stayed with overnight were very cool and kept tellin me i shouldve come on saturday and gone to the crazy parties...and they were pretty sincere about it

in terms of good looking, i think there were a few hot chicks there :) haha...and meadle, its not hardcore from everything i've gathered (dont have to worry about cuthroat crazy premed stuff)

and in terms of usc, i've actually heard that their dorms empty on the weekends because people go home to party...dont quote me on that though...i think theres a thread somewhere on it

oye guju
go to hpme. it is definitely the stronger program. how fun or boring it will be is completely up to you because college is what you make of it. if you have the opportunity to go to an amazing university and an amazing medical school, take it. if you're going to be a doctor you might as well be the best you can be.
(i know, you're thinking i'm a hypocrite because i don't even know if i'm going to hpme, but honestly for me it's more of a money issue)!
:)

and ew i don't like kobe, or the lakers
i am a Pistons Fan
because they're amazing :-D

I think USC is quite generous on AP credit (you just need 3's) so that's a huge plus compared to NU.

"Clearly, HPME is the only med program where you get a nationally ranked Med School along with a good undergrad education.

Most of the other programs package mediocre med programs and mediocre undergrad with the only advantage being that you get accepted to both."

My, my your bias is showing.
Northwestern ranked 14, Feinberg Medical ranked 21
Rice ranked 17, Baylor Medical ranked 10

Doesn't seem like that much difference. Rice is known for their emphasis on undergraduated education and is, in general, a collabrative over highly competitive environment. That being said, pre-med there is very tough and definately one of their most competitive programs.

Good choices all the way around and Good Luck with your interview on Wednesday.
