If i am a out state student what tips are helpful to manage my money when it comes to buying airplanes ticket for Vacations? What can i do to save money when buying a ticket or booking one?
@pilot12346flight book as early as possible, and it may help to monitor the price in case it drops. But note that most (not all, for example Southwest) US-based airlines charge for change fees. Of course, check all the major airlines before booking.
As soon as you know dates of your classes and exams (like which day you can leave for winter break), book a flight. Look for the cheapest airfare. Sign up for frequent flyer programs to accrue points. If you fly Southwest you get two free checked bags, which is really nice when going home for longer breaks. If you fly on an airline that charges for checked bags, don’t check any. Mix and match with airports to see which is cheapest; it’s cheaper for me to fly out of an airport two hours away and land at one two hours away from my hometown because they’re major hubs and are almost always cheaper.
I suggest you try to fly southwest, even if you have to drive further to an airport to do so. You can buy your tickets well in advance and change them if needed without paying any fee. Additionally there is no baggage fees or seat fees. In March I am flying to Orlando from DC for $75 each ways - I bought the tickets in December not knowing if I was even going to be using them because I know I can cancel them and simply use the money on my account for another flight sometime in the future.
Also make friends who live in the area so you can stay with them for minor breaks.
