I already spent close to $500 in AP tests, SAT, ACT, SATII tests, and college application, now i heard i have to take the TOEFL.

PLEASE CAN ANY ONE TELL ME WHY IN THE H###, THE CBT TOEFL COST $110? I THINK THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD INTERVENE WITH SUCH A RIDICULOUS THING. THE COLLEGE BOARD AND THOSE OTHER TESTING AGENCIES ARE JUST PICKING PEOPLE'S POCKETS.

relax, you haven't spent much
here is my total
3 times SAT I = $200
SAT prep class= $1000
2 times SAT II= $200
SAT study guides= $300
bad SAT scores = priceless, for everything else, i get a smack across the face!

An SAT costs $29.50. Multiply that by 3 and you get $88.50, not $200...if you add late fees each time (which is your fault), it comes up to $193.50.

An SAT II costs $17 registration fee plus the test fee. Being generous for you, Writing costs $17, Lang w/ listening costs $18 and, being even more generous, you took them on separate days, so 17+17+17+18 = $69, not $200. Even adding late fees of $35 each time puts you at only $139.

10 Real SATs: $14
Barron's: $15
PR w/ CD: $21
McGraw Hill's: $10
Barron's Verbal: $10
Barron's Math: $14
SAT I for Dummies: $12
SAT I Cliffs: $12
SAT I VIDEO: $40
Up Your Score: $8

Equals $156. Throw in $50 for SAT II books: $206. Still far short of $300. (Keep in mind, you are a loser if you got all those things I listed...

Afroed, don't feel bad, I've spent about $900 on all that stuff (apps and APs are KILLER!)

It is ridiculous... but then, if you put it next to the $160,000 it's going to cost to GO to college, it's not THAT much...

I would like to see a break-down of where all of CB's money GOES. I don't think it's an evil corporation (it is non-profit) so much as a terribly inefficient one. Since it has no real competition (sure, ACT and IB, but those really don't take much market share), it has no reason to streamline costs, and money just seeps through all the cracks.

My mom actually has first-hand experience with the CB because she works for the office in our school district that orders the exams... she says they are even more badly organized than our public school system... and if you have seen the Seattle public school system you would know that is saying A LOT.

I think what needs to happen if costs are ever to go down is CB needs a couple FOR PROFIT competitors. Capitalism works.

sorry i meant Canadian dollars, which is really high now, 1 USD = 1.213 CAD
i don't think any of you are 'international students' international students get charge 20bucks extra for each test so if you got 88.50
add 60 bucks for SAT I and taxes in canada is robbery, it comes to about
180 bucks
SAT II, international fee, the first one i took (3 tests) 88.50
second one about to take 2 tests 74.50
so i guess i rounded up
it's 173 for SAT II
and 180 for SAT I

hardyharhar. well true, a plethora of credit is going into the the pockets of the ETS. but the people around me, along with myself, have no time nor energy to complain. when it comes to tests and test preparation materials, parents [asian parents especially] just don't look too much into the costs.

wait i just read tht som1 spent a thau on SAT PREP CLASSES?!!! why would anyone do tht...well at least did u learn a lot and get a 1600??? If i were u id ask for a refund if i made a single mistake but honestly a thau for tht lame SAT!!!

elodie, by your spelling mistakes I would suggest you take an SAT prep class. Try Kaplan, we're pretty good. We actually charge 800, not 1000, if that's he's referring to.

By the way, if capitalism works then there should only be ONE testing company, not 3. This is one of the few situations in which a monopoly is hard to break up.

^^^Kaplan sucks. His spelling is fine, if you look, he (she?) is obviously conscious of the mistakes in spelling but is merely using them as a shortcut (IM language, if you will).
