Outside Merit Based Scholarships Based on Scores

Hello,

I am a rising sophomore at a private university that meets “100% of demonstrated need.” For my freshman year, I received the (one-time) $2500 National Merit Scholarship, so I am now looking for one or more external scholarships to match that amount. Does anyone have links to scholarships with summer deadlines that put a great deal of weight on standardized test scores (and GPA)?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Please post such a list when you find or make one.

There really aren’t such awards. Outside entities don’t have much interest in providing awards for continuing students, particularly based simply on GPA and high school test scores.

continuing students have a very hard time finding add’l awards. Sometimes if you’re lucky and the top student in your major, then your dept may give you a small award.

Can you take out a student loan or work over the summer to cover that 2500?

Have you gotten your aid pkg yet?

Also, for schools that meet 100% of need outside scholarships frequently just reduce the need so it’s a wash in how much the family has to pay.

Thanks everyone for your replies so far!

@mom2collegekids I won’t receive my financial aid package until next month, but I am not expecting it to be very different from this past year’s. I am already working full-time this summer (internship and research), but it is all going to tuition for summer classes.

@Erin’sDad I am very well read on my school’s financial aid policy. There is a specific portion of the expected “family contribution” that is designated as the “student contribution” that I can offset with outside scholarships. Past that point, you’re right - the money simply lessens the grants I receive from the school as opposed to the amount that my family pays. My student contribution is around $2500, which is why I was looking for something in that range - anything more than that isn’t really useful to me.

For additional context, I have demonstrated financial need, so I am really looking for any outside scholarships that are based on need that take scores into high consideration (though I am not pessimistic about my extracurricular activities and writing ability).

I’m glad you checked into your school’s policy on outside scholarships. Good luck.

Check your school’s website for continuing student scholarships. Some schools offer dozens and others not so much. Also check with the local chapter of the school’s alumni group.

Why are you doing that when you need money for school in the fall?

Contact your high school. It is possible that there are some local, scholarships for continuing students. Worth the call.
