Outside opinions on picking a major?

Hey, all!

So, what's your opinion on picking majors? Should it be what you really love, or should it be something practical, something you know your good at that can probably get a good job with? Should you start with a career in mind or choose a career from a major?

I'm asking because I'm having a hard time deciding. I love a lot of things and I'm reasonably good at most of them. For instance, I love biology and English, both of which I'm good at. I've put some serious thought into double majoring but I've heard that it isn't worth the all the extra effort and hassle. I'm not sure what field I would go into if I pursue just the biology major. I would probably end up going to grad school for a more specific degree, such as molecular biology. As for going strictly English major, I'm not sure which career I would I would go for either.

I've thought about becoming a teacher. Right now I'm taking an AP Calc class and I really like it. I love explaining things and helping people with this subject because it can be very tricky and I feel amazing when I help someone else understand a subject that intimidated them before. I like the school setting and I believe that by teaching, I'll always be learning, which is my true passion. I know teaching requires a lot of heart. (it would be secondary education. As for which subject, I'm not sure yet.)

So to circle back to my question, which way do you believe is best for selecting areas of study?

I'm a junior right now. I know I have a little bit of time but I just like being prepared and having an idea of what I'm working for.

I would say choose something that you are passionate about, because if you are passionate about it, you will be able to translate that into a career. For example, I was considering a major in Public Health, but I realized that I am really passionate about Social Work and giving back to my community. I had to ask myself, what did I want to be doing in five years? Opening a diaper bank for low income mothers, or drawing blood or working with science, statistics, etc? Think about where you see yourself in five years, that may help you choose a major :)
