outside rep. of student body vs. real life

i know this has been addressed a bit in the "social scene" thread but i wanted to get at it more directly...
vassar seems to have a reputation to the outside of being a kind of pretentious, artsy, hipstery place. when i visited, i felt like there were mostly just "people"... there were athletic looking kids, fashionable kids, and just normal dressing kids.
because i've spent way more time than i'd like trying to get along with "hipsters" who are insanely judgmental about how thrifty and "scene" you look and consider themselves artists only if they look this way, i'm just hoping vassar isn't like that. i consider myself an artist but gasp just wear clothes that i think are nice looking (including the scorned j.crew!), don't consider myself a "prep" in the abercrombie & fitch sense, and like all sorts of things but don't limit myself to that which is exclusively out of the mainstream. am i going to fit in at vassar? i got a very welcoming vibe from visiting vassar, but when i mention it to people they seem to think of it in the terms i described.
i wish i could have said this all more succintly. sorry...

I think Vassar is having a hard time shaking some of its reputations. Today, my friend's mom asked me if it was all girls. So I think the artsy, pretentious reputation is just hanging around, and isn't really true.

I agree with the vibe that you get-- totally normal. It feels like it has its more theatery kids, its artsy kids, but they're not all scene kids out to fit you into a mold.

I don't know, I'm probably going there next year, and I love me some J. Crew ;)
