Hello everyone, this site has been incredibly valuable to me in the last few months; I became a pro in deciphering those loans packaged as grants in some award letters. I also learnt to politely ask for more aid which we received. However, the school DD will be attending this fall has a cap on the amount of outside scholarship that can be brought in ( maximum of about $5000/ year to knock off student contribution). The school suggests that if you have more than that amount you may ask some donors to defer award till subsequent years, otherwise it goes towards reducing the grant the school already gave. DD now has about 5times the allowed amount from various organizations, the amounts vary from $1000 to $60000, how do we go about asking some donors for deferral? Does anyone have any experience in this? I welcome all suggestions.

I think you need to contact each scholarship granting agency for that. I think not all scholarships would allow that. If any of the scholarships are renewable, it probably does not make much difference to defer it or not. You may just let it offset your grant from school. You know that $60k if is for one year, it is likely to cover the CoA completely.
It is not uncommon to have scholarships offsetting grant. It is good that your school at least allow $5k to lower your cost before touching the grant.

Thanks Billcsho, I see a typo in my post…I meant the amount of scholarship varies from 1K to 6K, not 60k:)
