question...
D is likely to be offered a $1,000 renewable scholarship from her HS drama club.

how do schools handle outside aid coming in after the FA has been set?

i'm concerned that it will negatively impact her financial package at the GWU.

D can refuse the scholarship of course, but she doesn't want to... it's an honor that has meaning to her.

I don't want to disturbe the FA beast.

1sttimemom: I was in you D’s spot about three weeks ago when I received an outside scholarship (although mine was a one time thing, not renewable). I assume that your D’s scholarship is like mine - sent directly to the school’s FA office and not in the student’s hands?

I talked to a FA advisor when I went to GW for admitted students day and what she told me was this: the money is added on top of your whole account (which should be a couple k short from 60k). Given that the amount I and your D received is relatively small - especially compared to GW’s price tag - not much in a student’s financial aid package will change as a result. If the whole cost of attending is covered by grants, university scholarships, and loans, they take the $1,000 and substitute it for the loans. The lady told me it would take out a part of unsubsidized, not perkins or subsidized. So you will have 1k less loans. I opted to use that money to live in a better dorm than what I originally planned (based on what my package could afford). Thus, I kept my loans instead. Make sure to contact the office; they really help out without “disturbing the FA beast” as you say. That was my initial fear but it all went really well Good luck and hope I helped a little ~

insom…

thanks for the reply. want to make sure i’m following…

using ballpark numbers:

scholarships/grants = $42,000
stafford(S/US) + Perkins = $6,700
PLUS/alternative = $8,500

so the $1,000 would come in and the same amount would be dropped from the unsubsidized stafford?

of course, she’ll call the FA office - but getting someone else’s experience is helpful!

thanks!

Yes, from what the financial aid advisor at GW explained to me and showed me in calculations, it would be dropped from the unsubsidized Stafford. So glad you were able to understand my long rambling in the previous post, haha :D
