D has received full tuition from Pitt. I also get tuition benefit (for any school) from my employer up to about $14K, but it can only be used on tuition. It can't be used on fees/room/board. I think I'm supposed to give the school bill to my employer, and they will pay the school directly the amount of the tuition line item, up to $14K. If the bill says the tuition is zero they won't pay a dime.

Does anyone know how this will pan out? Can the Pitt scholarship be used to cover fees/room/board? Does the bill contain a line item for tuition and a line item for scholarship credit, or does it simply list the tuition as zero?

Is it appropriate/advisable to talk to someone at Pitt about this?

The bill will show the costs (tuition, fees, room & board) then it will show the Full Tuition Scholarship awarded and any outside scholarships. So you have a list of charges and then a list of credits (including the tuition scholarship) and then the balance due.

For the outside scholarship, we had to have Pitt fill out a form then it was forwarded to the agency handling the scholarship, check was then sent directly to Pitt and credited to the account. This could be handled differently depending upon the scholarship received.

I would call and ask Pitt about this although it is pretty specific that it is a “tuition” scholarship.

I don’t think you can use your employee benefit for Pitt, but there’s no harm in asking both Pitt (first) and then your employer (second) to make an exception.

Thanks so much for all the great inputs so far. The Pitt letter said we got the “Full Tuition Honors Scholarship”. Is that the line that’s going to appear on the bill, word for word? I mean, if it reads something like “Honors Scholarship” I think my employer will pay the Balance Due (which is presumably under $14K).

Yes, this is an employment benefit, not a scholarship, and I’d hate to see it wasted. It would be like getting a pay cut Unfortunately it’s for undergrad only and I can’t save it for later.

Thanks! I guess the key is whether my employer would view the scholarship as a credit against the entire bill (in wihch case they should pay the Balance) or a credit against the tuition portion.

Yes, the bill is very detailed with description of each item so the tuition scholarship will say “UHC tuition Scholarship” and the amount credited for it.
