Does anyone have any experience with how Pitt handles outside scholarships that can only be used for tuition (for students that have been offered full tuition by Pitt)? Do they just replace part of the Pitt Scholarship, or will they allow that $$$ amount of the Pitt scholarship be used for room/board, etc instead? The scholarship bulletin isn't very clear.

DD did not have a tuition specific scholarship; however, she did have a full tuition scholarship. Her National Merit Scholar money was always paid after we had paid any fees she owed and Pitt just deposited it into her personal checking account. I would probably call and ask the question.

Yes, it was the same with DS’ Byrd Scholarship. It always arrived late and we had paid the balance due so it was always deposited back into his checking account. This is different from what MommyDearest is asking.

Thanks, MD…I thought I’d try here first since its the weekend. Good to know that we might have to front some funds.

Some schools’ “full tuition” scholarships are the value of full tuition, but can be used for expenses other than tuition. Some schools’ can only be used for tuition, so if you get outside scholarships that can only be used for tuition also, then the school will just reduce their award. Hoping Pitt is the former!

The other thing you may want to know is that there are fees of about $400 per semester that are not covered by the full tuition scholarship. I do not know the amount of your outside scholarship, but what a bummer to have it specify tuition.

What I will say is that every single person we have talked to through the years has been nice. Hope you get the news you want. It would be nice if Pitt’s scholarship is the dollar amount of tuition that can roll over to pay other charges.

I don’t know if this helps, but I had the $10k “half tuition” scholarship from the UHC. When I got my full tuition scholarship from SSOE, the $10k was still given to me in the form of $5k/semester put into my checking account for me to use however I wanted.

^^that sounds promising…thanks, Awesome!

For others in the same situation, it is a “no” from OAFA. Full tuition scholarship is applied to the tuition only, student would have to turn down the outside tuition scholarship.
