OV Packing List?

I was just invited to my first overnight official visit. I was planning to stay overnight at the college (I have my interview the next day) and the coach said she could set me up for an OV. This is my first one. What kind of stuff should I bring? Both for sleeping over and shadowing the athlete to classes, lunch etc.

Well, I am going to assume you are a girl, since you are asking what to pack. I’ll take a stab at it for you:

1) Depending on the weather where the OV is, try for a pair of shorts/t-shirts (athletes don’t dress up for class typically), and some comfortable shoes, lots of walking typically. )Sperrys, Toms, tennis shoes, etc)
2) You’ll probably go to dinner or a party, so a nicer more “trendy” outfit for that event. (Nice top/shorts or skirt or if colder climate, jeans.)
3) Something to sleep in–most athletes in my D dorm wear shorts and a tshirt to bed
4) Bring your toiletries–shampoo/soap, etc
5) Something nice to wear for your interview
6) Unless you are in the deep south, take a lighter weight sweatshirt, often you’ll go to a sporting event at night, even if not your sport.
7) Phone to text mom you made it to the OV and to text again when you are leaving. Otherwise, phone should be invisible during your visit so you can absorb as much as possible. Whatever you do, don’t let coaches see you with it.
8) Bring your goals and questions for the coaches so your discussion with her goes smoothly.
9) Bring some cash–just in case you need it. If you are an OV, typically the school pays for your food and entertainment. If you are on an unofficial visit, then you’ll be expected to pay for those items and your transportation.
10) If for some reason you are visiting an SEC school, they tend to dress nicely for classes, and especially for football games, and pre-and after parties. You may want to plan accordingly.
11) If you know who is hosting you, you might want to reach out to that person for ideas on what to bring. Some schools want you to bring your own pillow.
12) Check the weather app prior to packing–it will help you know what to expect.

Best of luck.

You should ask the coach where you will be sleeping, you may need a sleeping bag if they are putting you up in a dorm room with another athlete, and don’t forget a towel.

Thanks so much!

Good luck and have fun!
