Overall&major gpa, class rank in grad school admission

In terms of graduate school admissions, does overall gpa or major gpa matter more for engineering?
Also what about class rank? Is that required to be stated on an application? I don't think class rank should matter because it doesn't say whether or not the people with a higher rank took easier classes, thus having a higher gpa.

My college didn’t have such a thing as ranks. I’ve never heard anyone talk about their college rank on here. I suspect many schools do not do it, so it would be hard to compare a student who was ranked with one who was not. Your GPA and the type of school/program you went to should give enough information to the adcomms.

Class rank doesn’t exist at the college level - there might be a few oddball exceptions, but it’s a number you won’t be asked about and nobody will care what it is.

One or two schools I’m applying to have this field in their applications (either molecular/cell or microbiology). I don’t think either of them have it listed as required. I freaked out a bit at this at first, as I have never read anything to do with class rank from my school and a search on their website comes up with nothing, transcripts of course say nothing of the subject.

I could probably bug the school about it and (possibly) get an answer. But since the information isn’t required (and, honestly, probably would be just one more number that would stress me out), I’m not going to worry about it. Maybe it’s something more useful for international students, or those from other schools with a non-standard GPA?

If your current school doesn’t rank or put anything on a transcript, then no amount of nagging is going to get you any information. They simply don’t compute such a thing, and will not sit there and do it just for you. It’s not a big deal, so don’t worry about it. The strength of your program and your GPA will be enough information.

My undergrad computed rankings and they would it give it to you if you ask for it, but it doesn’t appear on transcripts and no one cares anyway.
