So what do you guys care more about?

Your GPA or your class rank?

So what do you guys care more about?

Your GPA or your class rank?

Is this for high school...? Because you don't really rank in college... At least, I haven't heard of any undergraduate college (maybe the service academies?) that ranks, other than magna/summa sorts of things.

really? they don't have class ranks in America? Well i know that Univ of Waterloo and Univ of Toronto give class ranks.

Aren't they correlated? High grades = higher rank?...

I mean if you have a 3.5+ and you're in the lower 50% of your class it says something about your school's grading or your class...more likely the school though.

I don't know of any US school that uses class rank in engineering outside of honors.

I think some schools estimate class rank, i.e GPA of 3.5 means you are in upper 15% of class (these are not actual numbers though). But I've never heard of an actual ranking, i.e 120/5,000 students

Also, if American colleges do have such a thing, would the ranking be out of your major/college/entire graduating class?

probably major would make the most sense... but that is a hypothetical question. you really dont see it often (if at all)

In which case, I would definitely care more about my GPA, because I was probably third or fourth in my year within my major at Rice... There were only twelve of us. ;)

i was answering what the rank would be in relation to. (univ., college, or major)

I think she was answering OP's question IF rank was in relation to major (what you said would be).

Yep, what lil_killer129 said.

Neither.

I mean, if you're still in HS, then I think your GPA holds more value.

In college, rank doesn't really mean anything (undergrad here), and as long as your GPA is above 3.0, you're pretty good, and you should complement that with some type of work experience in your field and/or research.

In grad school, rank can mean a lot. Graduating first or last in your medical school class doesn't change the fact that people will still call you doctor. But graduating top 10 in your law class can get you a 6 figure job at a prestigious law firm; a lower rank means you'll have to start at the bottom, perhaps even for a salary that you could have gotten out of undergrad.

ya i know class rank doesn't matter much in the long run whereas grades will help for jobs as well as grad school. Its just the competativeness in me makes me care about class rank. You guys?

lol =) my graduating class will be about the same in my major.

Chances are you won't even know your class rank. Neither my undergrad or grad schools ranked students.

ya i'm a bit surprized at that. Top canadian schools email you your class rank at the end of the term.

I go to school in Canada and I've never heard anything about class ranks...

i only know of Waterloo and Toronto that do it. I'm know ppl in some other schools and they don't do it.
