Which,do you think, matters more to HR -Overall ranking or Business School Ranking?

All depends on which industry’s HR people you’re talking about. If you are heading to a ‘standard’ MBA-type career (i.e. consulting, finance), then the business school ranking is more important. On the other hand, if you’re not going to a traditional MBA-oriented industry, then the overall school brand dominates.

One of the most prominent examples of this difference is MIT. Plenty of otherwise well-educated people don’t recognize that MIT even has a business school, despite the fact that MIT Sloan is one of the top business schools in the world. That’s the inevitable result of a brand that is so strongly affiliated with technology and engineering. Plenty of people will automatically assume that anybody with an MBA from MIT (or, heck, any other degree from MIT) will be a maven in quantitative topics and technology management, but be weaker in softer areas.
