What other colleges did you consider besides Muhlenberg? My D gave Denison, Dickinson, and Wheaton serious consideration before selecting Muhlenberg.

My S was considering - Muhlenberg, UVM, Clarkson, Wheaton (MA) and Brandeis. He has narrowed it down to Muhlenberg and UVM honors college - for Neuroscience major.

We are visiting Muhlenberg and UVM -next week end/ Monday.

My D has narrowed it down to Oberlin and Denison, along with Muhlenberg. Also admitted to Dickinson (among a few others), but she never felt the love there for some reason.

oberlin is a bizarre place (imo) just google hoax and oberlin you will find multiple stories about it. the students thrive off victimhood and create it because they can not find the real thing. dickinson has a main road running through the middle of campus and is not as warm as muhlenberg (no not temperature wise) denison would be my second choice after muhlenberg , but I have heard it has a big drug culture.

muhlenberg is the best all around school (IMO)

@zobroward, thanks, I’m aware of the hoax issue at Oberlin. The way the administration handled it was, in my mind, pathetic. I don’t think my D will wind up there. I liked Dickinson, the road thru the middle of the campus didn’t bother me in the least. D was not on board, and I agree, that it wasn’t as ‘warm’ as Muhlenberg. As far as drugs at Denison, yes, I’ve heard that, but I sense that it was more of a problem historically. I think Denison has changed a lot - more academic and less partying than in years past. I firmly believe that D will do well at Denison or Muhlenberg.

If you do or do not want to go to Oberlin that’s fine, but for gosh sakes don’t make it about that hoax thing.
That was a particular situation that happened, a few months out of the school’s six zillion year history, and it’s over. It’s not like it’s an ongoing event that defines the school. Nothing like that happened when my D1 attended. Or any other time for that matter, ever.

It’s my D’s decision, not mine.

monydad, that was not a one off hoax…they have had multiple run ins with hoaxes and the schools response is pathetic.

here is some more about oberlin’s troubled history from a person who graduated from the school.
http://michellemalkin.com/2013/08/23/how-oberlin-manufactured-the-hate-crime-hoax-of-the-year/

ok so there was one, exactly, Asian nutjob in the 90s too. I stand corrected. So BFD,
Again that does not define the school.
Nor does Michelle Malkin. Which should be obvious.

But I’ll agree that a regular reader of Michelle Malkin probably would be more comfortable elsewhere.

monydad the point is muhleneberg is just a really great all around school and probably a much happier more tolerant school than the other(IMO) and talking about oberlin is off topic (a little) that said oberlin is for a certain type of person. to sum it up muhlenberg rocks!

As for the school’s response, what do YOU think they should have done, up until the point that visible hate crimes were identified to be a hoax, ?? Would you really do or say nothing?? I’m not convinced they did anything particularly wrong. Malkin makes a lot of accusations in order to make a story and embarrass the school, for her own benefit.

The bottom line is, when something like this happens, a school’s administration is immediately thrust into a no-win situation, and whatever they do will be subject to criticism, by someone.

But a student mostly goes to classes, studies, gets grades, goes to extracurriculars, hangs out with friends. No matter how a particular administration reacts to a particular highly weird situation. The students are not part of the administration. That does not define their life as a student.

@zobroward What’s your connection to Muhlenberg?

I have no affiliation with either college, but keep in mind that on previous occassions Zobroward has made some “interesting” claims.

I would take Zobroward’s opinions with more than a few grains of salt.

My older daughter goes to Muhlenberg, my younger daughter is looking at Oberlin. They are both great schools. I can praise Muhlenberg without finding reasons to disparage other schools.

As far as the original question regarding overlaps- my daughter was a theater kid, her final decision was between Muhlenberg, NYU Tisch, and Sarah Lawrence. She chose Muhlenberg because of the comfortable vibe and the strong theater department. I suspect the theater kids will have a very different list of schools under consideration than the STEM kids.

My daughter is a dancer. She chose Muhlenberg over SUNY@Buffao, OCU and Alabama.

D chose Denison. Best of luck to all the Mules!!

Besides Muhlenberg, I was accepted at McDaniel, DelVal, Clark University, University of Rochester, and Mount Holyoke. Muhlenberg was almost the worst in terms of financial aid so I will not be going. Best of luck to everyone!

Brandeis, Trinity, Skidmore, Franklin and Marshall and Muhlenberg…although Brandeis was top choice for D due to it being her reach school, she is heavily leaning towards Muhlenberg because of the theater program and merit aid was by far the best out of all of them.

Although my son really liked Muhlenberg, he decided on UVM honors college.

I have a D at Muhlenberg. The Muhlenberg D was also theatre/dance and chose Muhlenberg over NYU, Wagner, Marymount Manhattan, and Fredonia (SUNY).
