Overnight Experience

me too. i hope we get along. but i guess its okay if we don’t since it’s only for a day

Is there a date for the overnight experience?

it was last month

how was it? was it useful

I couldn’t go because my host cancelled on me but I heard that it went pretty well and was informative

ohh i see sorry to hear about that.

I went to the overnight experience and it did more damage to me then help so u didnt miss out on much

sry to hear that too…can you elaborate plz did you have a bad experience/notice faults about tcnj…

I scheduled an individual overnight visit and was matched with a host with my same major. I personally had a great experience. I attended a few classes (including a lab) and met a lot of great people. Everyone was very friendly and I was impressed with the professors. It was a valuable opportunity to learn from a college student’s perspective. Not only was the campus gorgeous, but I got a great vibe in general. The only downside was the food, but I hear that it will be improved for next year. I definitely felt at home there, and I know it’s a great choice for the next four years.

can i ask how did you feel about the bio department…esp when you where in the classrooms did they seem intensive and rigorous, yet doable and helpful? How did the professors that u watched seem, helpful or condescending?

I just want to know if the bio dept. is as good as tcnj pretty much restates…thanks

In the genetics lecture, the professor used a standard powerpoint and explained each slide. She would highlight really important things by drawing it on the board. She was open for questions during the class. I met her afterward and she was soooo sweet and helpful because she understands college kids. She seemed pretty flexible with the workload/tests. I visited on a day after a really hard test, but she implied that there would be a little curve. In the lab, she gave clear directions (it was a simple PCR lab). The professor was really down-to-earth.

I also met a physics professor. Conveniently, I happened to be learning the same topic in my AP physics class that they had just finished learning. I was genuinely interested in the lecture because the teacher made it interesting, and he was really funny.

Hope this helps! I am truly excited to become part of the bio program…I can’t wait!

ohh that sounds like great and relieving newsss! I can’t wait either

Well the negatives that affected me was just the social aspect in general. The whole experience my host kept on telling me that the majority of people in the college are racist against African-Americans such as myself. And to top it off the black students actually separate themselves from the college due to this fact. I know that everyone in the college is not racist but this sort of made me uneasy about choosing TCNJ. I come from a diverse community and am used to mingling with people of all races so this was shocking. I also know that there are people that are not as accepting towards blacks but, experiencing this at the overnight was a wake up call. Despite this

The nursing program is very good. The girls inside the department were also very nice. And the curriculum was hardcore xD

I don’t think very many students at TCNJ are racist. I’m a current freshman and here is what I have observed

There is definitely a large group of African american and Latino students who separate themselves and spend much of their time together. This group rarely associates with people of other races. I was told by one girl that her particular clique had spend ~6 weeks together prior to school starting for EOF programing. This could be part of the reason?

For minorities who don’t wish to spend all of their time in a clique, don’t worry about it. My primary group of friends consists of about five white kids, an Indian, an Asian, and two black kids.

There isn’t any overt racism as far as I’ve seen, but the separation that does exist, to the observer, appears that the African Americans have been separated, though I suspect that the separation is self imposed.

thanks this really made me feel sort of better about things  ^^

I agree with tcnjbusiness. I have MANY friends of various ethnicities. The college experience is what you make of it, and if you make an effort to out yourself out there and meet lots of people I can assure you you’ll make lots of friends who are of various backgrounds.

Phew, I was starting to get a little worried lol
