My son is going to UR's SOC next week and has registered for "overnight hosting," but he hasn't received any info on exactly what that entails. All he knows is that he's supposed to report to the Admissions Office at 4:30 PM that day.

Does anyone have some direct experience with this program?

I assume that he will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow; is that right? Does he eat both dinner and breakfast with his host? (I assume he pays for his own meals.) What do the students usually do in the evening when they are hosting?

My d did the overnight thing last year during SOC. You bring the sleeping bag, pillow and towels (don't forget towels!) to the admissions office, where they're kept until the end of SOC. Then you meet back at admissions and the kids are introduced to their hosts. He will also get a voucher for dinner & breakfast (and maybe even lunch the next day; I don't remember).

D ate dinner with her host & her friends. Then her host had some activities to go through - she was in the mixed a capella group, and had a rehearsal which d watched. They also went to visit some of her host's friends in another dorm - the host went to study and d spent time with the host's friends. These friends weren't expecting a senior to drop in on them, but they were very friendly and welcomed d into their rooms. Their reactions were a main reason that d is now at Rochester; she felt that the kids were "like her." As far as I can tell, there aren't any specific "events" prepared.

D didn't do breakfast; she got up and went to class.

Chedva, thank you for your helpful response. It helps to know a bit more about what to expect. (And thanks especially for telling us about the towels -- we would have completely overlooked that!)
