Hey, I’m going to be doing an overnight visit at Rice at the start of February, and I’m just asking for any advice to get the most out of it? Also, is there anything I can really do while I’m there to help with my admission decision? I’m excited and hope that I really enjoy it as it is my number one school
Just quite literally imagine how life would be if you were to start going there everyday. Besides the academics. Do you enjoy the atmosphere? What about the city of Houston? Do you feel safe?
During my visit last summer I wasn’t actively thinking about these the entire time. But post-visit I asked myself some of these questions and I had that good feeling that I knew it was what I wanted.
You always see some serious parents and their kids actively taking notes throughout the tour or whatever. For some people, that’s what they need. For me, I just like to take it all in with my eyes and ears. It just feels more natural that way. But do whatever you need to do to make sure the visit is memorable enough that you can recall it when making decisions.
When you are on campus stop by admissions office to say hello / meet your admission counselor. Also develop a short list of questions for him/her. That will relay to them your serious interest.
Sit in on classes, go to something at night (maybe the improv group has a show?) your host will rob ably invite you to some activities, definitely meet with admissions and perhaps the department you are interested in. Go to Rice Village. Have fun!
