Agreed. I’d certainly like to know, anyway. Leaving your daughter out on her own until 2:30am is inappropriate and not excusable.

My D also had a less-than-positive overnight experience at Tufts. Her host could not meet her and so she ended up with a big group of admitted students and one or two hosts that took them to a fraternity function and then invited them to a fraternity party. My D didn’t want to go to the party and so ended up back in the dorm room alone. Her host did offer to stay with her but my D told her she’d be fine alone. Since I wasn’t there I don’t want to judge host, but I did wonder why she volunteered to be a host if she wasn’t around much. Hearing that there was a shortage of hosts helps explain this. D did say that some of the other admitted students were thrilled to be going to a Frat party. It just wasn’t a good match for my D.

I will say that I was very impressed with the AOH day events. I received a warm welcome from everyone and felt a very positive and exciting energy on the campus. Perhaps D2 will like it better than D1!

Ah…all of this is making me very nervous to go to my overnight on Thursday! Has ANYONE had a positive experience?

^, don’t let a couple of bad experiences influence your expectations for your overnight host on thursday.

and yes, neethu, it’s me. ;)

Aw, hi Karen Nice meeting you last Thursday!

Yes! to the “positive experience” question. I spoke with three young ladies who enjoyed every aspect of the overnight last Thurs. They were given the option of attending the fraternity shindigs, but declined and attended other entertainment options provided on campus (a vocal performance? not sure after a whirlwind of campus visits) In any event they stated that some of the prospective students became downright giddy about the prospects of attending a fraternity party. From the feedback above, it seems that these parties might’ve been less spectacular than anticipated.

The school will be providing alternatives to drinking beer with bunch of eager frat boys, so seek those out on Thurs. night. Talk to other kids. You’ll have a great time.

The dorms seem a bit dreary. Otherwise, Tufts really is a terrific institution. I felt like a moron amidst all those overachievers.

AOH is on thursday and friday this week… this weekend is SPRING FLING-- ludacris, asher roth, and the decemberists!-- (arguably the biggest partying weekend of the year… meaning lots of all day drinking events that a large part of the student body will be partaking in). Also, we are just ending classes.
So with that in mind, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to hear many more stories like those just mentioned.

My overnight turned out to be great…so great that I put my deposit in today!

AOH was superbly done (although I was not able to do an overnight, so can’t comment on that aspect). I thought the presentations by the profs were great (especially the one on Darwinism!) and the food in the dining hall (Carmichael?) was the best I have had on any campus. My parents got to go to a talk/Q&A session by the president of Tufts that they said they found enjoyable and candid. Overall, a great day and obviously a well planned-out day by Tufts admissions. Sadly, our last stop last Thursday was at Student Services to try and get a couple of more dollars from FA, and the news was bad so I won’t be in Medford next year. But in an alternate universe, who knows what may have happened?

And by the way, I think the cannon points north (wasn’t it pointing toward the admissions hall, or am I wrong?), so w.t.f., it’s not pointed at Harvard, it’s pointed at Dartmouth. ;-)

my overnight was great. great enough that i turned down duke.

I think it is an unwise decision to have overnights on party nights though.

I can’t believe I’m sitting in India and missing all this…still, a lot to look forward to this September…!!!

Hi,
Last spring my son’s host brought him to 2 parties with drinking. He was disappointed in the experience. So,this year my son signed up to host 2 kids from outside the area. In addition to answering all their questions he took them into Boston over by Fenway Park. They got a taste of Boston, the subway system, and still had time to participate in the Tufts activities. The prefrosh met other current studentss to get their perspective too.

My son is a science major and is definitely being challenged. He works quite hard, is focused, but still can have some time for friends and some athletic time. He is able to work 3 hours a week off campus in his field.

The food is great and the school small, but not too small.

He was fortunate to have many excellent choices for college. He is happy at Tufts!

It sounds like your son is finding the science track to be manageable. I am hoping that it is not overly intense or unpleasantly competitive. Curious as to what courses he has taken.

S2 did an overnight visit in early April (not one of the Accepted Student Shindig events) and had a host who was very gracious and generous with his time (esp. since he had a midterm the next day) and the friend of a CC poster’s S who took S to dinner with a group of friends and then went to study on Sunday night in the chem building.

Worked out very well – S2 chose Tufts! S2 is thinking about hosting pre-frosh next year specifically to show what life is like if you don’t party. His older brother is also involved with talking to/hosting prospies at his college, so I am sure they will have a lot to talk about in this regard!

My son’s host took him bowling. He had a good time, and it was good to see how easy it was to get into Boston. However, I think he would also have liked the opportunity to meet other current Tufts students. His host at American U. also took his prospective students off campus, but they went in a group with at least one other host.

He is a freshman so he’s only taken Bio 13 and is taking Bio 14. Bio 13 was tough and is called a weed out class. Bio 14 -don’t know whether he’s learned how to study differently or if he was somewhat anxious as a first semester freshman competing with so many kids who do well, but he is definitely more confident and is doing well in Bio 14. Both these courses have a lab component. He has had no problem with them.
