My son got a likely letter last week and as you can all imagine, he's very excited! My question is, should I schedule an overnight visit? He will be hearing from 9 other schools at the end of March and I thought it'll be a good idea to get this out of the way. What do you think? If any of you scheduled an overnight visit for any of your children at UPenn I'd love to hear from you

I’ll be honest, I think a lot of the subtle things that differentiate top tier schools are only noticeable after you spend a decent amount of time there. The only thing an overnight visit will really do is introduce you to the campus so you can decide if the architecture spiritually offends you or something. There’s not much harm in doing it if it’s convenient for you to do, but it shouldn’t make or break your son’s opinion on the school.

^ thank you. There’s no convenience really since we live in FL. I’m thinking of flying him up there when he’s on spring break, which all of those schools will be back in session and visit 5 schools within the NE he applied to. Probably a better choice

Penn and others will have admitted students events. Sometimes over a weekend, sometimes during the week. All pull out all the stops to WOW the admitees. Conversely, is this the actual representation of the school? A private visit on your DS’ part might yield better info. But if he’s accepted to more schools in the area, he may want to coordinate.

Also, don’t be bound by the HS spring break. The earth won’t split open if you take him out of a few days of classes at this point. Congrats and good luck w/his info search.

Thank you. LOL, yes I was wondering taking him out in April will be bad? I guess not. Good advise

Just check the spring break schedules of Penn. You wouldn’t want to show up and the campus be empty.

I already did. They come back April 24 when my son starts his SB. So does Princeton and others in the area. What I’m really thinking is going over a weekend to Durham and visit Duke and UNC. He’s already being accepted to UNC honors and we can visit that and Duke. Just a few minutes away

In case you aren’t aware, Penn has overhauled it’s preview program for admitted students this year (previously called Penn Preview Days, and now called Quaker Days if I’m not mistaken), and it now includes an overnight stay for 2 nights (April 7-9):

<a href=“Penn Preview Days sees overhaul in structure | The Daily Pennsylvanian”>Penn Preview Days sees overhaul in structure | The Daily Pennsylvanian;

I’d strongly recommend that he attend that, if possible, since there will be lots of informative programs for accepted applicants, but they will also get to stay and visit with current students and experience a couple of days of “regular” Penn life while school is in session.

Incidentally, Penn’s spring break is March 8-16, with classes resuming on March 17th, so I don’t know where you got the April 24th date:
