My son got a likely letter last week and as you can all imagine, he's very excited! My question is, should I schedule an overnight visit? He will be hearing from 9 other schools at the end of March and I thought it'll be a good idea to get this out of the way. What do you think? If any of you scheduled an overnight visit for any of your children at UPenn I'd love to hear from yo

If Penn is high on his list, sure, do the visit. This will give him more of an insider’s view.

Do they have an accepted students event?

@Consolation
Yes, they will come April. My concern is that he applied to quite a few Ivies in the NE, including Princeton (deferred), Yale, Columbia, Cornell and Brown. WUSTL, Duke and Rice!! Yikes, imagine he gets a couple of more from this pool, touring in April will be crazy. But I think maybe if we wait and we choose the 2 best FA package to go ahead and visit those. We’ll see

My daughter had to choose between Penn and Rice. We visited both in one week. First Rice, which she loved, then Penn which she loved more. She’s graduating from Penn in May. It’s way better than Princeton BTW. Schedule the visit.

My son already spent 2 nights at Rice and he liked it, but did not loved it

Well, the thing is that admitted students days tend to have lots of events specifically aimed at prospies. This can be very attractive. Spending a random couple of days at a school is hit or miss. Some hosts may have time to show the kid around. Others just provide a spot on the floor. One can be very seductive. The other can be off-putting.

If your son wants to get the most favorable impression of the school, he should plan a trip during the “official” prospective student visitation program. As Consolation mentioned, schools often plan activities (musical concerts, extracurricular fair, academic sampling, sporting events, etc.) for the high school students on that day…and the students get to meet their prospective classmates (provided that they all matriculate in the fall).

If you’re interested in the specifics of what goes on at UPenn during its “official” visitation weekend, then call up the admissions department. I’m sure someone there could give you a preview of when/what to expect.

Good luck!
