My son was admitted EA and we are planning a trip in mid-Feb to visit. Caltech doesn't appear to offer overnight visits except on PFW. Is this correct? Does anyone know of workarounds? If not, does anyone have suggestions other than the standard tour and talking to stray students to find out more info?

Not sure if Caltech does it, but sometimes if you call the particular department your son is interested in you can get a tour from a current student of that department. I used to do it at my undergrad school and I know it was pretty influential in a number of decisions.

Our departments don’t do that, it would probably be better to ask admissions for it. If you told admissions your kid wanted to stay overnight they might be able to arrange something… I know kids do it all the time, usually though when they know someone on campus.

Try going to some freshman classes if the admissions office doesn’t know of anyone to take him around for the day and see if he can find some frosh who would be willing (I did when I was in high school).

Sure, but there’s so much more to see than just what’s on the tour. There’s house dinners and murals. there’s hanging out and meeting people. there’s going to classes and labs. (your son should try to do most or all of these, especially if he isn’t coming to prefrosh weekend)

We didn’t ask for overnight, but school arranged a tour for just myself and son, spent an hour talking with him, and gave him list of classes he could attend.
