Questions about the overnight visit

Ds is trying today to schedule his visit online today, and we have a few questions:

1) What is the structure?

He'd like to not have to miss two full days of school, if possible, but on the form it says that you can arrive anytime between 8:30 and 5. If he goes ahead and gets there first thing in the a.m., what would he be doing? Would he meet his host right away and go to classes that first day, or would he just fill his time with info sessions and stuff? Because if it's the latter, I'd rather he just go to school half a day, show up at 2 or something and take the tour that first day and leave classes and interview for the second day.

2) He knows a couple of kids going there. Can he pick a host?

3) Do I as a parent schedule things separately? We toured the school two years ago -- our first-ever college tour -- and we all fell in love with it. Of course, now I'm looking at it all through a different lens.

4) Does anyone know anything about Questbridge? Ds will be applying to Rice through that program. Do you think as a parent I can get a meeting with financial aid?

5) Any general advice?

TIA

In response to number 2, if your child personally knows a few people here, can’t he just contact them and ask if he can stay with them? That might be easier than going through the school as you will most likely have more flexibility in scheduling.

And I believe parents should schedule things separately. As a student, I can say that I wouldn’t want my parents following me around campus during my overnight stay.

Ha! I wasn’t going to follow him around. I meant that when he submits the form, will it in any way ask whether a parent will take him to campus and then allow him to indicate that the parent would like to sign up for things on his/her own.

I thought an official vist to Rice would be a way to show some love.

If he gets in through questbridge, it’s a fullride plus some. Check out the info on the questbridge website that shows what Rice offers.
