I think Duke is overrated. 3 people from my school got accepted into Duke and now they are all big jerks. Their egos are uncontrollable. They have slacked off a ton in school which I don't believe in. I think when you get in you have a certain responsibility to your school to at least put in a little effort. Every time I see one of those accepted students slack off, it ruins my day. I'm sure many people who go to Duke are good people, I just have a problem with the huge ego's and the constant belittling they do, just because they got into college. It is ridiculous

just because i like ivy league schools doesnt mean i have a big ego
this was simply something i noticed at my school. now maybe it's just those three that have big egos and all the other 400something kids that got accepted are humble. who knows

there are kids from my school who got in ED to harvard and yale. They are the nicest people ud ever meet and they are soo humble about their acceptances. It just seems like a wierd coincidence that all 3 that got into duke are acting this way

The kids from your school just cannot represent all of those who were accepted Duke ED, just like they can't represent Harvard or Yale EDers. It's impossible. I think you're being a little too narrow-minded here... I mean, your outlook on Duke shouldn't be based on the behavior of THREE PEOPLE, right?

u do have a point. I will be the first to admit that probably most of those accepted ED are great people. I am just venting through personal experiences. One of the kids who got in used to be one of my best friends, like a brother almost. Once he got in, he got very cocky and so arrogant and stopped talking to me, almost as if I was inferior because I didn't get into college yet.

The only place where duke is overrated is in the USNews rankings. It should not be tied with or ahead of Stanford, MIT, and CalTech. Other than that, it's fine.

I don't understand ivyrule's jump of logic from observing arrogant/lazy duke acceptees to claiming that duke is overrated. Since when does a school's students' general attitude affect its quality or prestige?

I don't see how you would think this is somehow Duke's doing... I'm pretty sure that the school doesn't go out of its way to recruit that type of people. It's a reflection of the people you hang out with, not the school they go to. There are arrogant people everywhere.
If everytime they slack off it ruins your day, you have problems that you have to deal with for yourself. Lashing out at the school they happen to go to is a bit immature.

As for it being overrated, I'm not even going there. That is a decision you have to make for yourself, no magazine can make it for you.

What spectrum are you talking about? You came onto the board of a consensus top-10 school to call it overrated because of resentment between yourself and some people at your school, who coincidentally happen to be going there? I really don't get it. I think the only spectrum we're at opposite ends of would be the "logic spectrum," with you coming down soundly upon the "illogical" side.

my friend and I got in early and there's no way we ever acted that way. it was more a sense of relief, if anything. As I had a number of good friends who didn't get in where they wanted early, i would have never thought to "gloat" or do such things. if what you want is to judge a school based on 3 guys you know, that's fine by me. i just think it's a shallow judgment to pass, seeing as I clicked on this thread looking for at least SOME sort of well founded argument or observation about Duke. Of course there are some people here like those guys at your school - but there are obnoxious people at EVERY university.

obnoxious bastard? ha!
i love how i make one comment and the entire duke community swoops in and attacks like i just killed their mom or something

ivysrule- it is totally fine to express your opinion on this board... but if you post it on a board where every single person thinks the other way, don't expect your post to be greeted with cheers and applause :)
