what are the really overused books/ other pieces of literature that students write their essays on?

According to UVA adcoms...they're sick of Salinger.

"How I Plan To Solve World Hunger"
"My Favorite Pet/Teacher/Parent"
"The Trip To Europe That Changed My Life"

"Tuesdays with Morrie." I've seen that one cited by adcoms.

what about transcendentalist works

Overused literature (or lit that everyone reads and many write about):

Catcher in the Rye (Salinger)
Great Gatsby (Fitzgerald)
Romeo & Juliet (Shakespeare)
The Scarlet Letter (Hawthorne)
Pride and Prejudice (Austen)
Sophocles

Basically any common books used in AP Lit... I'm sure admissions officers see enough of those. You can do a google search and find more common books.

There are probably plenty of bible essays floating around too...

Outside of lit...

definitely "the trip to ____ that changed my life"
"How I Won the Big Game for my Team"
"How My Grandma's Death Changed my Life"

"sports are a metaphor for life"

lol.

so what about transcendentalists??? eg. Emerson, Thoreau

They might think that your knowledge of the Transcendentalists only goes as far as a quip or two from the Dead Poets Society.
