I'm not trying to be a troll or anything, but I'm overweight (not morbidly obese or anything like that), and was wondering how overweight people are treated on campus. I've visited a few and it seems like EVERYONE is skinny and I never see anyone overweight. Are there fat people in college and how are they treated?

you really gotta specify a bit more than that. i mean the average American i think right now is overweight. anyways no one cares if ur overweight at least as far as making friends go. hooking up, not sure how that'll effect you. if you're overweight though make it your business to lose some weight.

Well yeah, the average American is overweight but not the average college student. I am trying to lose weight, but I'm unsure how I'll be treated on campus.

People aren't going to attack you or ostracize you. But with proper diet and exercise you can get into better shape. Go for it!

^that's kinda funny

even if people arent mean to you, youre probably always going to think you dont fit in as much because as you claim everyone is skinny. so basically youre always gonna be self conscious no matter what, (maybe lol) just try to lose, colleges have gyms, hit em up!

haha, I would ask the reverse question.

To the OP:
I would def. think there are people who are considered 'fat' in college. I would think that people in college would be much more mature and friendly. I don't think college is in anyway like high school (i.e. overweight kids being bullied, whatever). You find your own niche.

I know that everyone here is like -hit the gym. They must athletes or something huh? haha :)

I understand how hard it must be to lose weight espeically if you're not like 'obsese' but with just a few pounds. It's not just about hitting the gym, there's a lot of mentality at work too...

I honestly think that you should work on your confidence. If that means working out/ losing weight go for it. If it means just learning to accept your body and love it then go for that too.

Oh, sorry for bad spelling -it's early. Forgive me.

Best of luck

OH! tseguun -what do you mean???

Yes, there are overweight people on college campuses.

Some arrive overweight, and some gain weight once they're there. (Have you heard of the "freshman 15"?)

As is the case everywhere, there are some people on college campuses who are shallow enough to judge someone by their weight. There are also people who are going to care about what kind of person you are.

You're going to want to hang out with people from the latter group. Members of the former group are not worth your time.

Most colleges are large enough that you can fairly easily just not deal with people who aren't nice to you. (If you are looking at very small schools, I'd suggest a campus visit where you can walk around and see how people behave toward you.) The main exception is in your living situation. If you land in a dorm and are treated badly by people you cannot avoid, go to your RA. That's part of what they're there for.

And remember: a lot of your colleagues are going to be insecure and worried about their own perceived faults. If you are the sort of person who cares about what kind of people they are and not whether they have funny-looking ears or whether they're really awful at math or whether they can't go out for coffee with you because money is really tight or whatever, you are likely to attract people who care about the kind of person you are and not what size clothes you wear.

Of course there are overweight people in college! freshman 15 gets alot of people. But there are people who come to college overweight too. I was a little chubby when I started, lost some weight for a few months, and have gained most of it back. This is in the past two years. Am I self-conscious sometimes? Sure, especially if I go shopping with my best friend who is an xs size 1, but not because of anything anyone else has to say about it. You don't want to give your time to people who would care that you aren't a perfect weight anyway.

People seem skinny in college because of the dorm food :(.

OP, people do not look down at people because they are fat.

There was a time when my fraternity was desperately seeking a fat kid who would wear hawaiian shirts to parties...we took some subpar rushees trying to make that happen.

Haha awesome bro. That sounds totally awesome, like just totally sweet. high five

A significant % of the young in this country are overweight.

The average college student doesn't look like the kids on GREEK, I promise, unless you go to a school just completely dominated by frats (and even then of course there are people who don't fit that mold there).
