Who's going to the Oxford program this summer? :D I just got accepted! :D

Congratulations.

I was going to apply, but the scholarships are barely ever given and I've heard from parents of children who went to this and they said they were allowed to drink on weekends, etc. I don't really want to be around kids like that.

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but pretty much anyone with the money gets accepted.

The courses look great, though. I wanted to major in IR and minor in Speech and Debate. It would've been awesome.

Have fun!

I almost applied to the Oxbridge Program at Oxford, but I wanted to acquire skills in language, which I couldn't get there. It looks awesome though! Have fun!

Ahh, its ok, I've heard different things from parents, but..

Not raining on my parade, I'm VERY excited, 144 days, yay! :D

thanks :)

Really Jonathan? Like the program allows the participants to drink on weekends? That is absurd!

^ I can't tell if thats sarcasm or not..

Oxbridge does NOT let you drink, and it was pretty clear to me that if your caught your sent right back home.

A parent whose children went to this program in Oxford said that there were kids who were drinking; keep in mind they are around thirteen to fourteen years old.

No, that was not sarcasm. Thanks for clarifying Jonathan - at virtually every summer program you're going to find kids who drink, unfortunate as it is. A program that allows drinking is an entirely different story.

On a brighter note...you will NEVER forget this experience. My D attended the program at Cambridge. She was entralled with the professors-she took a class in International Relations and Shakespeare. Both AMAZING. She said they would debate at length about Kant, and Aristotle, and Bush, and Mandela...the students were from all over the world, and from different social/economic stratus. Make the most of this experience-Its Great!

thanks APOL :D

Jonathan1 - are you sure this is the same program, this is for high school. Most students in high school are over 13 years old...

Anyways, kids are going to drink. Middle school, high school, college. They just do. Not going to not go live my dream because of some silly teenagers. There are worse kids in my high school. Are they drinking or getting drunk? There is a bit of a difference. I seriously doubt the majority of the program will, and the rules state that you can't. So the 5 people out of 300 that drink. Oh well. Not going to ruin my trip.

Any ways, I heard very good reviews from some CC parents. :D

I'm talking about the Oxbridge Prep Experience in Oxford, England.

Yea, thats not what I'm doing. :P

Oxford Tradition is the program I will be attending.

Kitty-As I understand the difference--Oxford Tradition is much harder to get into-its not just a $$check and you are in-so kuddos to you for getting accepted!

Aww, thanks :D I'm very happy :D I got my first choice major/minor too. Classical Civilization / Fiction into Film.

I have to get a job now, to pay for the spending money portion, they recommend $900-$1400.

APOL, about how much did your daughter spend when she was in Cambridge?

My D did Oxford Tradition in 2004. I didn't hear about drinking. But I did hear about hookas and smoking. Parents - learn about this and talk about it with kids before they go.

^^Not sure what the effect on hookah lounges will be, but England's smoking ban in public places goes into effect this summer. So this may not be a problem.

My sister did Cambridge this summer. She loved it, and when I flew out to visit her, I loved it too. Too bad Cambridge doesn't really like to take American students. =/

It's still with the same company. Just different age groups.

My son got the phone call today -- he got a full scholarship to the Cambridge Tradition program. He is absolutely thrilled! He was really worried because they don't give out many scholarships.
