Hi! I am currently in high school. And, I am thinking of applying for undergrad in the UK. However, I would like to do Graduate school for Medicine in the US. I know it is hard to apply for Biological Sciences in Oxford, for a high school from the US....so that is why I am planning to take a gap year after high school to study more science and math, and perhaps conduct some science research....before applying to Oxford. I do not feel I will be wasting any time...because Oxford Biological Science is a 3 year course. So, even if I take a gap year...or go to some random college in the US for year, and then start from the beginning in the UK after that.....I will still finish my "undergrad" at the same time as my fellow peers in the states. But, my main question is--is it possible to take the Biological Sciences at Oxford for 3 years as an undergrad....and then begin med school in the US for my graduate years? I would like to work in the US as a doctor....NOT in the UK. And, I am NOT planning to apply for undergrad medicine in the UK....because I heard that it is hard to transfer a UK med school certification to the US. Therefore, I would like to study biological sciences in the UK for 3 years...and then do med school in the US (hopefully Stanford, Harvard, etc...). You can think of that as doing "pre-med" in the UK....then the actual med in the US. Is that possible? Or is that generally looked down upon?

It’s certainly possible to study biological sciences at Oxford.

But going from Oxford to a US medical school?

No. Every US medical school I’m aware of requires that applicants spend at least 2 years of their undergrad in an accredited US or Canadian college or university. They also require that applicants take their science and math pre-reqs in the US or Canada.

Brilliant idea, but it won’t work. Not looked down upon, just not possible.

Thanks for the clarification =) I should probably stick to going to college here. I have another question however…if I go to a 7 year guaranteed med school program (like Brown or Rice)…which is 3 years of undergrad (pre-med) followed by 4 years of med school…is it possible to take the first 3 years of undergrad, and then apply to a different med school like Harvard or Stanford? Or, is that not really recommended either?

Each BA/MD program has their own policy. Please go to the Multiple Degree forum:
