Can someone throw light on the differences between these two degrees? Also, Columbia is inaugurating a new 2 year Masters in Financial Economics. What kind of positions do these degrees prepare you for? Are they better than MBA for traditional Ibanking? Pablo Triana wrote not long ago that the MBA is facing a threat from these new MFin degrees, like the one at Princeton. Any thoughts anyone? Finally, would these degrees help in trading? Thanks.

Hi ramaswami,

The main difference between them two is the class profile. Cambridge MFin is aimed at people with more work experience and the MFE at Oxford seems to have younger class profile. You don’t need to have work experience to enter the MFE. Also, the MFE at Oxford is run in collaboration with the Economics department which means you will not only learn about finance but also about the economics of finance and vice versa.

yes, those are the publicly posted profiles, one is pre experience masters, the other is post experience. What I want to know is, how do they compare with traditional MBA path to finance, are they becoming the new alternative to the MBA, are they needed for trading, how do they differ from the MFin Engineering. Thanks.

They will not replace the MBA. They are not needed for trading.
