Oxford or Cambridge?

I know that there aren't that many people here who would apply to either but I need an opinion.
Which Oxbridge would you apply to for maths?
I'm trying to decide because I first set my eyes on oxford but only recently I started checking out cambridge and it seems really good too.
I know maths at cambridge seems to have a better reputation but the maths at oxford seems to be very good too...
A reason I might choose oxford is because it is close to an airport (dad's job. long story). Also oxford seems more city-like (I'm a city girl) and I've picked out a college which I would apply to. But cambridge's math centre is SO cool! and the colleges are gorgeous too.
I can only apply to either one. Some stupid government rule.
What do you guys think?

Normally people say Cambridge for sciences and Oxford for math, but you may want to check The Student Room forum for this (basically CC version UK).
Honestly I’m not sure there’s so much difference between both. Maybe you can have a look at the faculty, see who specializes in what and how that matches your interests. Since it’s a tutorial system, apparently student might sometime be able request to study with X professor if they are interested in their particular speciality field.

You also may want to check out admission rate for both Maths course and see how competitive your credentials would be. For example I know that for my country Cambridge says in the prospectus that they don’t want you to apply if you didn’t get (or are not predicted) more than 16/20, but Oxford says 15/20 is OK.

Honestly I wouldn’t choose for the colleges, since there’s the pool.

Did you listen too Oxford Podcasts (it’s like Podoxford or something). There’s plenty of into about applying, how to choose a college, and some interviews.

Whatever one you like most.

Oxford is certainly more city like, and if you have found a college you like then great; plenty of people decide between the two universities on nothing more than what college they prefer. Ignore the ‘Cambridge is better for sciences’ myth. However you might want to consider that Cambridge is a bit more flexible in that you may be able to switch degrees after the first year.

If you haven’t already, poke about on the respective dept websites and read up on the degree structures and courses available, also visit the-student-room forum where your question has no doubt been asked and squabbled over a hundred times before.

Okay! Thanks for the advice!

Nonsense! Cambridge has the strongest undergraduate Math curriculum in the English-speaking world.

Keep in mind that ** all ** undergraduate courses tend to be exceptionally strong both at Cambridge and Oxford. Cambridge has an edge though IMHO in maths, physics, economics, and engineering.

contrary to popular belief, prestige does matter, if its with the right people. its like going to harvard for engineering, I’m sure it must be decent but I call those imo kids crazy to turn down mit. Have fun later, get ahead now.

Yeah I know sorry, I meant Cambridge science, Oxford humanities, English, ect…
Doesn’t make sense, specially since maths is a science. I was just thinking about some maths stuff I wanted to do when I wrote that it got me confused.
The OP might want to check the league tables (for what they are worth).

Problem with league tables is that they vary so that on some Oxford is no.1 and on others Cambridge is No.1.

I second the view that says Cambridge is stronger in Math. That said, I think it’s more sensible to check out the curriculum on the respective websites and see which offers the courses or flexibility you want. Also bear in mind that you take exams in all three years in Cambridge’s Tripos system as opposed to taking Mods and Finals at Oxford, where you take a massive number of papers in your third year.

I went to both Oxford (postgrad) and Cambridge (undergrad) and Oxford does feel more city-like, but I really can’t see much of a difference college-wise.

It goes without saying Cambridge is better for Sciences and Engg whereas Oxford is inclined more towards Literature, Humanities and Social Sciences.

But specifically for Math, I think they both are equally prestigious. Though, people might choose Cambridge because of its overall inclination towards Sciences!

Good Luck :)
