Oxy RD Discussion 2015

Hey hellokitty2! I hope you get in too
Yeah, I requested an alumni interview cause I live in Chicago and can’t visit. It took 3 months for my request to get processed, but no complaints cause I really liked my interviewer. ilovedmb41, did you do your overnight stay yet? I’d love to hear about it if you did.

Not yet. It’s on February 9th. I’ll make sure to tell you how it goes.
The only weird thing about it is that its during Rush week and my host is rushing, so I’m thinking I might not be spending that much time with her that night.

Ah I see. Well still…at least you get to go! You can probably just wander around while she’s at Rush or see if you can tag along.

She said I could come with her, but that’d be awkward because I’m not a student and I already know the campus really well.
I have a ton of friends there so I might hang out with them, or I’ll do my homework. Or I could go to the kickass taco place down the street because I’m driving myself. Either way, I’ll figure out something.

Oh, ok. Well that still sounds cool.
62 days!

Did anyone receive any student id number or anything to check the status of their application for Oxy?

Nope! Just an email saying they would let us know soon if anything is missing.

Oxy is the only school I’m applying to that doesn’t seem to have any way of checking application status online!

It’s been my top choice for 2 years. Visited it in November. Really don’t think it was for me. I still applied. It’s a great school and it’s also expensive. I hope you all get in. I just don’t think I’ll be heartbroken if I don’t get accepted. The app killed me.

Just got an email saying my application is complete and giving me a link to the applicant checklist! April 1 can’t come fast enough.

If I was accepted into UCI, does that higher my chances of getting into Oxy? Since their acceptance rates are pretty similar…

And me too! I just received a confirmation from them saying that I’ll get my admission status by April 1!

I don’t know if that raises your chances, but you probably will get into Oxy
I also got a handwritten card from my admissions counselor! Made my day.

Just out of curiosity, did anyone else get a card from their admissions counselor? My parents seem to think it’s along the lines of a very vague likely letter, but I’m not sure what to think. It just said that she read and really enjoyed reading my application, and that she’d be in touch soon.

I think it depends on your counselor and it also depends on when they read them. I haven’t gotten one, but I turned my application in the day before it was due and I live in LA so I have a different college counselor. Idk.

Oh, and the overnight stay is great. I enjoyed the dorms a lot more than I thought I would.

yeah I don’t know. we’ll just have to wait and see
and that’s good! what were the dorms like/your visit in general??

Well, I loved being on campus because I feel at home there, but that might just be because I’m crazy.
I was in Newcomb and the dorms in there are a lot more spacious then you’d think a 3 person dorm would be. Like, they brought in a 4th bed for me and there was still enough room to walk around the room which is nice. They share a bathroom with the hall, but because the rooms are so big, there aren’t a TON of rooms per hall and sharing isn’t really an issue (unlike some schools coughUCLAcough). If I am correct, you’re not allowed to have your own TV, but there are 2 common rooms with nice, big flat screens and time sign-ups (plus everyone uses Hulu anyway)
I also have a friend in a seperate building that is either Bell-Young or Pauley and I spent a good deal of time with her. It was very similar to the dorms in Newcomb except the beds were metal and not wood and the floors were tile and not carpet. Really, it wasn’t that big of a difference.
The food was great. I love Oxy’s food. It’s so much better as compared to all the other college food I’ve had (although Chapman’s doesn’t suck…not the point). I went to Shrimp Tempura night. I love Shrimp Tempura. It was very good. I also had soup which was good too. Not exactly prime examples of food quality, but they still made me happy.
I also went to the Green Bean like 3 times. It’s the student run coffee shop next to the Marketplace. I believe all the coffee is free-trade and they get pastries from this REALLY good pastry shop in Burbank called Porto’s (the line there is always like 30 minutes long there so I never have time to go) which is a plus in my book. And the real coffee is pretty good, although the Chai in The Cooler is better. It’s still good though, so that is 100% not a complaint.
I wasn’t able to go to any classes this time because my host’s only class conflicted with an ortho I had to get to, but I’ve sat in on a class before. The class was Gay Rights in the Era of Obama and Google. The teacher was decently passionate about what he was talking about. The only weird thing is that all the classes still have chalkboards as opposed to whiteboards, but who cares right?

So yeah, that’s basically it. I really want to go to Oxy. 40 days.

That’s awesome. I think I’ll definitely do that if I get in…fingers crossed!! I’m getting so nervous about all of the college letters coming to my house and the online decisions…I also have a dance convention on April 1! And nobody on my dance company applied to college except a rolling 100% admit school in the city so nobody will get it…ahhh I can’t wait anymore!

Thank you so much for posting about your visit experience, it makes me even more anxious for April 1st!

But now I’m nervous since I haven’t had any correspondence with the school other than form emails, although I can understand they probably don’t send personalized messages to all 2000 or so admits. :/

Sorry about that…I just wanted to see if everyone got them or if it was something like a weirdly phrased likely letter. But like ilovedmb said, it could be based on when they read your application. I sent mine in early October (minus teacher recs/counselor rec/mid-year report) so that could have something to do with it.
