I just got off Reed's waitlist ... after having given my deposit to occidental.

I'm having a really hard time deciding which to choose from. Any ideas?

Totally different types of school environment. What do you want from a college? What attracts you to each school, what turns you off?

I really want to learn, which is why im drawn toward Reed ... but at the same time I worry if I'm really ready for Reed intensity. On the other hand, Occidental does offer a lot more in academic diversity, but the environment is just totally different. I love Reed's location and just the general vibe ... but Oxy's is definitely more fun and laidback. Gah, so hard to decide.

You are; Reed won't admit someone who has not proven to be ready. Your impressions seem black and white: Intensity vs. fun and laidback. Maybe your postgraduate goals can help you decide.

Uhhhh....REED

Duh.

Unless your academic interests include getting high all week.

I'm sure you could party or get high at any college. My daughter was careful to avoid party schools and has not found Oxy excessive; although I am sure she went to a party or two on the weekends-All the kids I've met have been really bright and engaged and somewhat serious ; have loved their school. Also there's the possibility of taking classes at CAL Tech if you want even more challenging course work.

ledzep and mj93 ... why "Duh"

high all week = Reed.

and Reed is one of the best LACs in the world so that's why they are saying Duh..no comparison to whatever that other colelge is...

Here's some data on drug usage at Reed:

How does this compare to typical or similar schools?

Reed is great, but Occidental is also very good in its own right. I would probably go with Oxy.

Oxy is LA and Reed is Portland. I am from Portland...I like Portland...Portland=Good

I actually had both schools on my list, but then I realized LA just wasn't me, Portland was. Portland and LA are completely different cities.

Tough decision. Both are good. I am from LA so I think it has a lot to offer. Are you still undecided? Can't go wrong with either

anyone else off waitlist at Reed yet?

Reed is a remarkable--and truly excellent--school. Congrats on your acceptance. The campus is beautiful--from the pictures I've seen anyway; I've never been to Portland--and the educational experience should give you a lot of confidence. (I.e. if I can do the work there, I can do anything. hehe.)

A buddy of mine from HS went Occidental and really enjoyed it. He's an east coast guy--four years there really mellowed him quite a bit. :)

This is a good choice to have... Follow your gut instinct=my advice.

I followed my gut and will be going to reed :-)

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REED REED REED. As a Portland native, I'm thoroughly surprised that our city is not a college hotspot. My friend's brother went to oxy for a year and transferred to Reed and LOVES it.

ive been to portland and i've also watched an outside theatre production at reed before. the campus is really calm and green. i liked it a lot, but it depends on what kind of environment you like. portland is not a city like LA or chicago.
