My son is considering both Pace University and St Johns for a BA in Economics. Looks like both will offer the same merit aid so I'm looking for other disqualifiers. Can anyone provide any other input? Unfortunately, we are currently living in Asia and will not have an opportunity to visit the campuses. Thanks in advance!

Pace is urban living, downtown Manhattan while St Johns is more or less suburban living. You can goto Pace Pleasantville, it’s close to rural type of living.

Just curious what kind of FA did your son get as international?

Thanks for the reply. I’m working in Asia, but we’re US citizens. Based on the Net Calculators, Pace would offer around 20k in merit aid and St Johns around 13k. It would be hard to pass up the aid from Pace, and it seems like they offer plenty of business internships, but I’m wondering if going to a more reputable school would be better in the long run. Any thoughts?

St. Johns “Appears” more reputable, in reality the two schools are comparable in reputation.
Pace being right in Wall Street, is more convenient to work during the school semester, you can intern right after school. St. Johns is in Queens, it takes 1 hour just to get to Manhattan to work.
While I was at Pace, I found a part time job on Wall Street just out of a page from the placement office. It was not an intern, I received reduced hourly wage, but as soon as I graduate, I had a full time offer from the part time employee.

Besides, at Pace, you can experience both type of living, urban and rural. Once you are admitted, you can attend classes on either campus without restrictions. If you want, you can take the free school shuttle between two campuses and take classes in downtown for one day and still living on Pleasentville campus. Obviously, it is not practical to commute between the campuses, one day a week is plenty.

I am not sure if there still is a farm on the Pleasentville campus or not. We had English classes there.

Thanks for the info, artlover. We were leaning towards Pace due to its location and opportunity for Wall St internships. As you mentioned you can finish class and practically walk to your job/internship. The reason I started looking at St johns, and now also Manhattan College and Hofstra is that they provide more of a traditional “college experience”. My S says he doesn’t mind the “downtown college” but he’s pretty active in school and may need some sort of extracurricular activity.

Regarding Pace internships, are they really that plentiful, and also are they quality internships from big companies?

Also, what do you think about Manhattan College and Hofstra?

Unfortunately, it will be hard to visit NYC due to our location so I’m relying almost completely on the internet.

Regarding other schools you mentioned, these are comparable schools in academics and selectivity. Yes Pace downtown does not have a traditional campus and if that is important it does not fit.
Regarding interns, jobs POSTed in the placement office won’t be from major investment bankers, let’s not carried away and comparing Pace with Columbia. They are mostly from smaller companies in downtown.
